So...what is your favourite version of the series of eternal awesome, as I call it.

Mine remains the books, although I still enjoyed the movie, and the radio series and television series still had thier share of awesome.

The DVD release of the movie is out soon, I believe September 13th.

All this talk of this so-called famous series, however I have never heard, read, played, seen, used, felt, or anythinged anything about it. WHAT THE HELL IS IT?!??!

Dash Render: the top of Guth's signature sums it up.

And I must say, my favourite is the original: the radio series. Indeed it has the most awesome incarnation of Marvin.

However, I did enjoy both the books and the movie. I'd like to see the original TV series at some point.

I think, I will quote Greenboy here. :P

"I compare it to massive ammounts of pure awesome, squished into an inside out box."

That's a pretty good description, I think.

I voted books, but I've seen / read and liked what I have seen - radio show, movie, books and the TV version.

Radio series and TV series were both awesome, but the books come VERY closely behind.

I said radio series even though I've never heard it because I never really found the books all that funny. There were a couple of parts that made me chuckle, but that's it. And I've heard the radio series is better.

I read the books, saw the film and watched the TV series.
the towel? how does that work?
They actually did make a towel for hitchhiker, and from what I heard it had a brief paragraph or something that summed up the story in brief.

Something like that.

radio series > *

but you already knew i thought that.

personally i think some of the most brilliant writing adams ever did was the last 3 episodes of HHG series 2, and NONE of it is in the books at all. (except for a brief allusion in Restaruant that only people who knew the radio series would get)

I've read all of the books and watched the movie. While the movie was good, it felt a bit thin and just wasn't what it could have been. I vote for books!

You oughta be locked in a room with $1000 dollars-worth of Hitchhiker paraphernalia. For a month. Then you would understand.

As for the poll, I was gonna vote for books, but the towel takes the cake. Believe it or not, I actually went through a brief Hitchhiker's Guild to the Galaxy phase and made my own custom towel. It contained:

- reinforced seams
- Velcro patches and a shoulder strap, so I could quickly fold it into a small hockey-style bag.
- two pockets, each about 4' square
-a little bit of copper wire threaded into it

Good times... :) I think it's actually in my closet somewhere.

[EDIT] Yeah, Bobbert, I agree about the movie. They shouldn't have made Arthur and Trillian a couple... I think it might really mess up the next movies, if they make any more. [/EDIT]

I've read the transcripts for the radio show, seen the movie, and seen parts of the TV series. I voted for the radio show.

Does anyone have any idea when the movie comes out on DVD? It seems like it should have been out by now.
While i do agree that doing that was a mistake, i don't think it would cause too much of a problem for later. if they continue the romance then yeah, problematic. but it wouldn't be anything unexpected (at least to hitchhiker readers) for aurthur and trillian to go seperate ways over something trivial. It happens constantly to aurthur, and it wouldn't be very ahrd at all to work in the premise that trillian starts to adjust much faster then aurthur, which is exactly what happened in the books, jsut earlier.
well, you guys have to remember, adams wrote the script...

...it just took "them" 20 odd years to finally pick up production on the movie. obviously he thought that them becoming a tad invloved involved would be better, and make more sense with how the movie goes with the slightly altered story.

Do you have any links to information on that? I've been digging around since reading what you posted and I can't seem to find a thing.

I actually liked the movie better than the books. Like I said before, I didn't really find the books all that funny, and they confused me. I think I liked the movie, because half of the jokes in the series were written to be read out loud, and you can hear that in the movies.

Well look at that, first post in the thread. Way to read, me.

Explain to me why them being a couple is bad. I'm only halfway through the radio series, but I haven't come across anything that would suggest it was bad for them to get together. In fact, I've been assuming that they would at some point. That was one of the things I liked about the movie.

I voted for the towl.
2005-09-03, 10:37 AM #37
The bad thing about them being a couple is that Trillian was supposed to be with Zaphod, not Arthur. It's funny because Zaphod is sort of a "relationship sociopath" and despite Trillian's best efforts, he somehow keeps their relationship stuck in a rut.

If I can get away with saying this, Trillian and Zaphod are one big cosmic joke, but that's precisely why it should be THEM.

Yes, Trillian is a woman who easily adjusts to new surroundings. Arthur is, clearly, not. Some might say that they would work because of all that "opposite attracts" garbage, but I'm pretty sure that Trillian would feel that Arthur is weighing her down.

Even so, if the romance continues, I'm looking forward to movie no. 5, and the introduction of Random.
