What happens if they escape?

How do you kill something that can grow back?

Yes we did.
One of the more interesting posts on the previous thread (I thought) brought up the fact that if it can regenerate it's heart.. is it still alive while it's doing that?

Anybody else get very disturbing visuals from that?

It's a mouse, so chill.

They said the brain wouldn't regrow, so chk-chk BLAM, and no more mouse.

Am I the only one here so far that knows the human body can survive for a certain length of time WITHOUT a heart at all and have it replaced ASAP?

Heart transplants people.

If they can regrow their heart.. that suggests that they destroyed their hearts.. if so how did they continue to live and to pump blood around their bodies? What I think we have here is the first recorded case of ZOMBIE MICE! We should kill them all before they start biting humans and bring about the return of the WALKING DEAD!

Key thing here. They said that they damaged the heart. This doesn't mean that they destroyed the heart.

Actually they froze part of the heart. So yes, it was damaged, but also yes, there was still some heart left to keep the mouse alive. But yeah, wow, that's really awesome.

Think about this: People could train the mice to be violent and aggressive, then pit them agianst eachother in battles, like a cock-fight. Some might say it's cruel, but the sting would be taken out of that because they could regenerate any wounded / severed limbs, and heal those nasty internal injuries.

I can pretty much guess the downside, which is a greatly increased risk for cancer.

They've been trying to do this for a while. In theory it isn't that hard; you generate the limbs in the first place, and they cells can detect their own age through a variety of mechanisms so you get proper limb development. Another thing that is odd is that cells have a finite number of divisions, unless they have a certain gene, but that would make them cancer cells (telomerase). There are other things as well, but yeah, crazy stuff.

Oh yeah, for those of you who want to look at the paper they published relating to this project, go here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=15293806&query_hl=1

If you uni has a subscription to that site that is, heh.

I didn't mean it like that, I don't care about the mouse. Just can't imagine "another day at the office" including chopping off body parts. Usually that's more of a job for those that hang out in their garage and paint the windows black. :p
