I bought a Ninja

What do you think? I got it for commuting to work. I get on the ferry 1st, and the price to cross is about the same as a bicycle (which is what I was using). I get free parking, and 62 miles to the gallon. I bought it new for $3,000.

Renew yourself.

(Hebrew expression you say to someone who just go something new. Sort of like congratulations.)

Dude! $3000 new? And 62 MPG? Damn! I've really been thinking motorcycles are cool lately and that I want one. I think you pushed me over the edge. I need one.

Ninja... Heh. You need some sort of a katana holder for a bike carrying a name like that...

Anyway, congrats. It looks great. I'm sure you will enjoy it!

Wear a helmet and ride safe. My dad was recently in an accident on his motorcycle, another one cut him off and he went off the road. Broke 3 ribs, upper arm and collarbone, now he has a plate in his arm. He always worries us, he's the wild one in the family. :P

Sounds fun though until something like that happens. But you can get a wreck in a car, a bicycle or just walking down the street. Hope you have fun with it.

I love bikes and that thing looks awesome, but be careful. Those things are WAY more of a risk than cars.

I know a couple of people that have Ninjas, they look cool and sound nice. I still like the bike we got this summer to add to our collection for $200

If it doesn't come with some type of sword, its not a real Ninja.

Nice looking bike though. Wouldn't ever ride one myself since a car is considerably safer.

I don't think when people buy motorcycles they are even consciously trying to buy the safest method of transportation... Other factors might matter a bit more.

at $3K it's probably a 250 or something.

Exactly. Like fuel economy, price, and the coolness factor. :p

Yeah, it's the 250R. I bought the smallest one I could get because I am new at riding on the street. I wanted a small, light bike so I wouldn't have to worry about dumping it if I lost my balance a little bit. The thing weighs 300 pounds, so it's really easy to manage. I think the 500 is about $5,000, but I'm not sure because I was out looking for the 250 only.

Regarding speed... there is an annoying engine break-in period. I'm not supposed to go over 4000 RPM during the first 500 miles, and I'm not supposed to go over 6000 RPM from 500 to 1000 miles. The red line is 13000 RPM so I'm really not even tapping half of it.

It's got a 6 speed transmission and in 6th gear at 4000 RPM I'm going 40MPH. So on my way to work there are a couple areas that are 50 MPH speed limit, so I have to rev it to 6000 to get a bit past 50. That's about as fast as I've had it... I'll try 6th gear at 12,000 RPM here in a few weeks after the break-in is over and tell you how fast it is :)

My brother's friend has a 250 ninja, too, and he says at 12,000 RPM in top gear he's at about 110 MPH. I really don't want to go that fast on this bike... meh.

Now that you have a Ninja, you need to insure it!

You might want to check insurance rates for motorcycle drivers. Often comanies won't even sell you personal body insurance. It's probably still worth it though in comparison to a car these days, so long as you're careful.

I know a guy who bought a ninja and a couple of weeks later got caught between two trucks on the freeway, got hit and ended up skidding for about 100 feet on his right leg - with the weight of the bike on it. The bike was totaled, so was his leg (broken in 5 places). He was pretty lucky.

Well, if this happened to me, I don't think my leg would mind having 300 lbs on it... the bike is really, really light.

Yes, motorcycles can be dangerous.

Re: insurance. I am paying like 40/month for all coverage EXCEPT collision. That means I am covered unless I am at fault for an accident. And I have health insurance for that, so I would be out any damage I caused. It would bring me up to 100/month if I wanted collision insurance, so I skipped it. I still have towing, comprehensive, underinsured motorist, personal injury protection, liability, etc.

I doubt it as well. But I prefer going long periods of time between hospital visits. I guess the fact that ALL my friends who have bought motorcycles in recent years have been in accidents, totaled their bike, and spent days/weeks in the hospital doesn't help me decide on buying one either. :)

Brian....I love you.

Back to the topic....

On one side I'd love to get a motorcycle, just because of the crazy gas prices, on the other hand I wouldn't because I would always be worried about going on the highway. Then again, I guess you really get used to it over time.

I'm thinking about getting a motorcycle...especially at 40-70 mpg. I've already had some experience on motorcycles, just need to take my test and all that good stuff.

My father used to race motorcycles.

I own four or five oldskool race bikes. Plus my dirtbike.

All from like 1970ish-1986-ish.

Some of them need titles, but those can be aquired. I'll probably start riding as soon as I can.

What dealership did you go to? I'm looking to sell my car for a bike and 3,000 is about my budget (even though we're entering the rainy season...).
