Are LCD monitors better for the eyes than CRTs?
2005-09-09, 12:44 PM #1
Sitting too close to a CRT screen has wrecked havoc with my vision over the years. I literally went from a near perfect eye sight 5 or 6 years ago to needing glasses to read text that's just a few feet infront of me.

Does anyone have personal experiences with the two? Are there any factors that I should take into consideration when buying an LCD?

How close do you sit?

I've used a CRT one since I was like 10, and now 10 years later I still have 20/20 vision (not me just stating that, that's what eye tests have shown).

I have been using a 21-inch CRT for as long as I can think, except of course before that when I used a 17-inch, and now, when I use a 15-inch LCD. The LCD strikes me as a bit cleaner and easier on the eyes, just by a tiny bit, but that might also be because it's a smaller, dimmer screen (laptop). I'm slightly nearsighted and I have been exactly the same for many years, despite my CRT usage. I don't think it's much of an issue.

I doubt it's really the CRT. My vision has been going downhill, but I figure if both my parents needed glasses then its genetics.

I like my LCD. When I go to use a CRT I'm like, wtf that's so blurry I can't make anything out.

Odd, it's the EXACT opposite for me. Then again, I'm using an iBook, so who knows if it's just Aqua or whatever that's messing with the text and whatnot, making it blurry.

I doubt the monitor lpayed much of a role in your eyesite.

Yes, LCD's are better on the eyes than regular CRT monitor's are.

The image's are also more clear and crisp.

Most of it depends on the person though, and how close they sit.

I used to sit in front of CRT monitors all day at work, and got headaches and eye strain pains from it. Now, I can sit in front of my LCD monitor for double the time and not have any problems whatsoever.

The only thing I dont like about LCDs is that you have to be looking at them at the right angle, or the picture is messed. CRTs can be seen from anywhere and still look the same.

I get far less eye-strain on an LCD, mainly due to the lack of glare.

Only true for crappy CRTs.

The lack of refresh rate on LCDs can be easier on the eyes though.

CRT's, good ones, don't hurt my eyes or give me headaches. So...yeah.

Which brings us back to my point,

It depends on the person.

I have yet to see a CRT monitor that's as clean or as sharp as an LCD screen.

This year I switched over to LCD cold turkey and I'd never go back for all of the money in the world.

Odd, all 4 of the LCDs I own have nearly 180 degree H and V viewing angles (almost no color distortion). To contrast that, all of my CRTs glare horribly due to the fact that my computer area is very hard-lit (bright lamps/dark corners, as oppposed to soft lighting like in schools from large flourescent panelling).

They make these CRTs that have anti-glare coating. I know mine has it, because I've never once seen a glare off it.

Not to mention, they have more expensive, cripser and clearer CRTs they started selling just before LCDs that have BEAUTIFUL picture quality, anti glare, and are rather thin. I have one, but it's not thin. I have a broken thin one, but I dare not open it to check what's wrong.

Overall, CRTs are more affordable, reasonable, and don't effect my eyes at all. LCDs, however, are hard to position for viewing pleasure [at least the ones I've dealt with] are too overpriced, and feel slow and soft with the lack of refresh rate.

I hate gaming on LCDs. EW.

I love LCDs. I've had my 19" Samsung for more than a couple of years, and I got it for a good deal back then. If you look hard enough, you can find really good quality LCDs, with low response time, for really good prices. At LAN parties I also like to go around and look at people's monitors, and LCDs have always looked more crisp and more vibrant than any CRT.

As far as the viewing angle, for most LCDs, and I say most because it's been a while since I've shopped them, most LCDs have great viewing angles. Hell, mines at least two years old and it has at least 160 degree viewing.

LCDs give me a headache. Which sucks.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

LCDs have worse refresh rates but I don't really notice the difference. I know I get a lot less headaches from my LCD then when I had my CRT.

Ew. LCDs have poor colors and slower response times.

I will never go back to a CRT. I love my LCD. Unfortunately, I require glasses now to sit long periods in front of a screen no matter the monitor type. I get terrible eye-strain. I used to get it worse with a CRT. I changed the refresh from 60 to 75 Hz and it helped with the headaches. You might want to do the same.

Yeah me neither. I find this thing to be much easier on my eyes. Plus it just looks cool.

Response time is not an issue with 12ms (and faster these days) screens. In years of gaming and DVD watching I have never once seen a shred of monitor-related motion blur.
LCDs have worse refresh rates but I don't really notice the difference.
LCDs don't have refresh rates. Like, at all. There's no such thing on an LCD. Maybe you can set it in Windows, but it doesn't do anything. Are you referring to response time of the pixels?

Also, there's no such thing as an LCD that can be perfectly viewed from all sides. If you think your LCD is that perfect, you're kidding yourself. Fundamentally, LCD technology just doesn't work for large viewing angles.

I can't wait until the legal disputes clear up and Canon/Toshiba finally release their SED technology. If it works as well as they say it does, it will instantly make all other display technologies obsolete (except in portable devices).
