I just love the US's definition of the word 'defense'.

I doubt it really changes the U.S.'s position as a nuclear power in the global community. The U.S. is about as likely to nuke Iran and Germany if this passes as it is now.

the instant george jr. went in to iraq to defend the US against what iraq did to the US, which was nothing, the department of defense had become forever more the department of offense. use any logic you like to argue this, but it's the department of offense now. and it always will be.

A nuclear assault to prevent a nuclear assault, right.
Same thing as a war to prevent a war.

You all act as if this is something new. You don't think they had plans like this during the cold war against every possible hostile nuclear power?
Life is beautiful.

As long as they film all the nuclear blasts in HD and make it available online, I'm for it.

Wasn't it called the War Department in the olden days?

I'm pretty sure they changed it when they wanted to downplay the American military strength, the same reason they changed ARPA to DARPA (which makes no sense, wtf does the internet have to do with defense?)

If I remember correctly, the internet was first conceived as a way to link communications in the event of a nuclear attack that might take out any "centralized" communication system. Basically so they would have a way of launching missiles across the network in case of a strike. As far as I know, the internet today does not have this capability ;)

What? He makes a valid, if somewhat cliché observation. One could argue with quite a bit of evidence that the US government has since well before the Bush election used offense in the name of defense.

But you would be right to say you can casually make that observation... To do so would be to start a discussion like this one.

A new draft US defense paper

Two key words here.

'draft' and 'paper'.

Notice the distinct lack of the word policy.

This is all because ancient vampires and other beings manipulate and control all political leaders to pursue their centuries old Unholy Jyhad.

Dont believe me? It says it in the Bible, really small text at the back.

Actually I sometimes want to believe the whole dark influence rubbish, because a part of me doesnt want to believe the human beings in charge are SO stupid, SO reckless, and have absolutely NO desire to make the world a better place for their children and their childrens children.

Nukes have absolutely NO power for the good, unless aliens or meteors show up in the near reaches of space...

i just did. the US used the defense department to go on the offensive thereby making it the department of offense. :/ seems logical to me.

It should never have been renamed in the first place. It was originally the Department of War, and I think that's a much more appropriate name for it.

Not exactly. The military is going to draft things like this all the time to plan fo every contingency they can think of. It doesn't mean it will ever actually happen.
