Should I get a PS2?
2005-09-16, 12:08 PM #1
Today I'm going to return my iPod to Best Buy and am going to get back about $149.99. I started trying to decide what I should do with the money, and I feel like, instead of spending it on a lot of small things, maybe I should get a new game console. I mean, I have a gamecube (Zelda! RE!), but I have pretty much all the gamecube games I like. I can't afford a PS3, and don't really like what I've seen about Revolution. Would buying a playstation 2 now be obselete? Is it worth it? If I get one, what game should I get? (Not really into the shoot 'em ups, myself. Anyway, thoughts and comments would be much appreciated.

Edit: I can't spell.

If you need to ask if you want to buy a ps2, you shouldn't get iit.
Save it till you actually really want something.

PS2 has a large library of games and alot of variety between the games, sports games, platform games, FPS and RPG's and many others.

GTA: SA should be out again now, We just got a shipment of i for Xbox yesterday, PS2 release should be there as well.

just don't get the PS2 Slim edition, we've gotten nothing but complaints about it, they removed the slot to place a HDD and they took out a fan, so it overheats alot faster then normal, if you get a PS2, get the big clunky one, it's more durable I think and with the duel fans will last longer.

If I were you I'd save up for the PS3 instead. Only problem is it's supposed to be uber expensive, BUT even if you don't get a PS3, when it comes out I bet the price of the PS2 will drop.

Exactly what was posted above.

There's really no sense in getting a PS2 right at this moment. The PS3 is coming out soon enough and will support PS2 and PS1 games. Ps2 is great, I have one. But at this point in time, buying a pS2 is useless when the PS3's release date is close.

The PS3, I'm willing to bet, will be around 400 dollars, maybe 300. Save your money, buy a PS3, and buy Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. Then the MGS games, then you'll have all of the PS2 games you need.

The question is: how are you going to get a reasonable new original PS2 these days? All the fat PS2s you can still get on eBay are quite old and have been used a lot, and that's not good considering the PS2s have a high failure rate because of disc read errors and that crappy laser. Buying a used PS2 means you'll increase your risk of falling victim to the disc read and it might die on you just a few months or a year after the purchse. Of course, the new slim PS2s have issues also and it's questionable if they're a better choice.

I currently have a messed up fat PS2 (disc read error, I've tried a lot of things to fix it without success) and while I would like to play PS2 games by purchasing a new PS2, the options I have (crappy old fat PS2, problem prone slim PS2) aren't acceptable.

EDIT: Price is also an issue. Sony has stated that they don't intend to lower the price of the PS2 come Christmas and will try to compete with the Xbox 360 by releasing more high profile titles. IMO, it sucks to still have to pay $150 for that thing. $99 would be the magical price point, but it ain't gonna happen.

And Ratchet and Clank, and Jak and Daxter, and Sly, and sequels, and GT4, and...god, too many titles to list.

Save for a PS3 or a Rev.

This is why front-loading CD drives suck: you can't just swab the laser off with some alcohol like you could with PSX. Man, I used to get so many "broken" PSXs at garbage day and at yard sales, swab off the laser lens, and resell them for a profit.

There are cleaning kits that will do the job, but I guess some people aren't that bright.

If you already have a Gamecube the PS2 would be a significant step down. Unless of course there are exclusive games you simply can't wait to play, which it seems you've already been doing, don't spend $150 for a PS2. I just don't think it's worth the price. I think the XBox might be worth that price but it could very well drop more since the new console is due in two months. The performance is superior to PS2 but it might lack certain games you want.

I'm just curious how/why people would want an Xbox 360...the only games slated for it so far are Halo 3 and PGR3...the rest are on both systems. It just seems too early to get into that kind of debate/decision yet, since not even the hardware has been finalized for the PS3.

Of course, if you plan on getting both, it doesn't matter anyways.
