This is all still in PLANNING stages, but here's the plan:
The first 60 people to sign up will be guaranteed a spot. After that, it's all up in the air.
Here's the deal. For free, you will get:
500MB of webspace
10GB of bandwith (This is a LOT, just in case you didn't know
)
PHP4, MySQL, Perl, CGI, all supported
cPanel for management of your site, and monitoring your bandwith/webspace
Free Email accounts (Explained further down)
NO ADS
And more I can't think of right now.
The catches (Because there's always a catch)
If you have a website to be hosted, you must have a link somewhere, anywhere (Can be in a link section, doesn't matter), that says "hosted by Sorrowind.net" with a working link.
That's it! And for those who will only have a file/image space, you will have an index.html placed in your main directory that you CANNOT DELETE, this will say "This filespace hosted by Sorrowind.net".
Now, for an explanation of the email accounts. If you do not supply your own domain name, you will be given a blar.sorrowind.net URL. This means you will have exactly ONE email address, and that's all. IF you supply me with a domain name you have bought, I will give you UNLIMITED email accounts, and subdomains.
Your email addy will be accessible via Web or POP3.
Additional Info:
Breaking the bandwith limit involves your site being disconnected for the month, with possibility for permanent disconnection.
NO PORN, WAREZ, RACIAL REMARKS, FOUL LANGUAGE (Anything more than Damn and Crap), or anything else that is illegal, or may be offensive. This is grounds for immediate disconnection of your site, with no chance for getting it back.
This service will be available to Massassi members only. This only counts to those who meet these conditions:
A. Must be a registered member of Massassi Forums
B. Must not be banned for any reason.
C. Must have a registered date of over 2 months prior to signup. This is to avoid people signing up quick to get around the system.
I hold the right to deny webspace to any members, and can change these rules at any time. I will attempt to inform those who already hold accounts of changes, but this cannot be guaranteed.
Estimated Date for opening day: June 12th.
And now for the final question: WHY?
For two reasons. One, lots of people have looked, in vain, for a good free webservice, for those just starting out. Unfortunately, free places, such as Geocities, does not let your site hold a professional look. Also, the bandwith and size restrictions means your site might be down when you least expect it. This service gives you over 5 times what any other free service does, at the same price, $0.
The second reason is that it will boost traffic for a business I am going to start, at Sorrowind.net. No details on the business yet, it is still under planning. But your link will provide traffic, however small, and will help support my server. Plus, the way I look at it, I'm paying the same amount for the server whether I use the space or not, so I might as well USE the space, then I can deal with it later.
The only thing this service does not promise is a 100% guarantee of long-term uptime. Keep everything backed up, since you never know how long it will stay up. It is not guaranteed that this service will be available for 2, 3, or even 5 years from now. It all depends on the popularity of this service, and the growth of my business.
So, now for my question to you:
Would you want a site? And if so, would you want a website hosting, or just file/image hosting?
EDIT: OH, and one other thing. Just like the Massassi Image Corner (NOT THE EDITORS CORNER), this site is not sanctioned by the Massassi Staff, and is only a service offered by ME, and ME alone. Don't ask anything about the server with Brian, or any other admins.
