I have installed XP on my computer and i have a password. But somehow (and my father can do it to but he WONT DO IT) my brother is getting acces into my computer what i DONT LIKE. this sucks even harder because i got alot of personal information on my computer witch i dont want to share with others. I want to get extra passwords you need to enter to acces my part of the computer. Is this possible with a batch file or another file???

Google for Cryptainer - it sets aside 20MB chunks of hard encoded space, then mounts them as drives when you run the program and enter the master password.

I use it for keeping all my passwords backed up, and for my bank details.

Oh, and apparently (to fan the flames) Macs come with something similar preinstalled on the OS, but that's just what a mate of mine said [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

There is *no* security in Windows. None. The only solution is to use a third-party program like PGP to encrypt all your files with some unkakkingly long passphrase. Thatll teach the little bugger... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Are you saying that you are a "user" and your father is an "administrator" and that you don't want other users or even the administrator going through your files?

Wouldn't the administrator (root) on a Linux box be able to access the files of any user? If not, I'd be worried. I don't like the idea of people doing things on my computer that I don't know about.

Like GBK said, try using an encryption program such as PGP, or you could just do things the old fashioned way (backing up your "secret" files on cd or floppy and hiding them away). For those of you that don't know, PGP = Pretty Good Privacy (at least it used to be?) and is one of the better known encryption techniques. It's also great for e-mail.

As root, you can read any file, but there's no guarantee what you read will make sense. If the contents of a file are encrypted then you are guaranteed to be able to read the ciphertext. There's no guarantee you can decrypt that ciphertext and read the plaintext.

[Edit: Turned some waffle into a coherent paragraph that actually makes sense]

It's called File Vault. It's a new feature to Panther. I played with it briefly recently after my dad set up the iMac with 10.3. It was cool.

Boot into safe mode and change the administrator password, people always forget to change that one, because it doesn't always show up unless you're in safe mode.

That's how I get into peoples computers when they bring em to me for me to fix. They forget to give me a password so I log into safe mode as administrator (hardly ever has a password) and create my own admin account. Reboot, do my thing, delete the account.

Make sure the guest account isn't enabled. Also remember, XP has built in file encryption, which is pretty good, and automatic when you enable it under file properties. Nobody but you with your password will be able to read them.

This is a tech forum question, and yes, picture do check there.

It's easy to break into a windows machine. I do it all the time at school when idiots change the passwords on us (I help out the techies at school occassionally). In 98 and ME its a complete joke. Just go into the Windows directory and delete all the PWL files. In xp, nt, or 2000 it's a bit trickier, you have two options, crack or erase. Either one requires a Linux boot disk however. You steal the SAM file or use a utility to overwrite it. To protect yourself from this kind of attack enable a bios password and padlock your computer case [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif] Thats the only way to keep your computer completely safe.

Like I said up top somewhere, Cryptainer has 128bit - dunno about that one you suggested (probably the same).

Cryptainer is small free and easy to use [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]
