After looking at those screenshots I must say the graphics are pure garbage, but as long as it plays like Serious Sam 1 I'll be happy.

Buddy you don't play ss for the graphics :). Mann, I hope Cryotech has made revolutionary changes like they did last time.

When Serious Sam came out, I remember being blown away by how awesome it looked. It was one of the more amazing games of it's time.

Serious Sam 2 is being released this month, and yet it looks a crap load worse than UT2k4. It doesn't matter how much more advanced it is, because it looks worse.

Look at those hands for god sakes? 3 bumpmapped triangles? OoOooo! I'm pretty sure that football texture was made in mspaint then later bumpmapped as well. Once again making games looking worse by taking shortcuts. I won't even say he looks like plastic, he looks like melted crayons.

The trees look pretty bad as well. Trees shouldn't look that bad now. They looked that bad a few years ago, but they shouldn't look that bad now.

The random patches of grass is nice, but it isn't like it hasn't been done before.

The character design has gone from awesome/funny to just plain silly and unoriginal. I think they ran out of ideas.

The bottom line is, this game might have been impressive if it came out in 2003 or early 2004! It just isn't impressive now.

'Course, Victor, you're basing all your opinions for this game on one screenshot... there are other areas/monsters to ogle at. And they look pretty damn good, IMO.
DO NOT WANT.
2005-09-20, 8:33 PM #20
I've looked at all the screenshots. While some of them look good, most of them aren't impressive. The game may not be GARBAGE, but by todays game standards it's behind. They remade the old enemies just fine, but the newer ones just look over-the-top stupid. Don't get me wrong, I still want the game, because I'm pretty sure it will be fun...it just doesn't look that great :p

Stop your ****ing *****ing. It looks a helluva lot better than SS1, and this will have better gameplay than 95% of the games out there.

God forbid I have an opinion on something. No need to get your panties in a knot and go off the handle with all these cuss words. Yes it looks better than SS1. That's obvious...and I don't see how pointless killing will be 95% better than most other games with umm whats the word oh yeah PLOT, and don't forget FRESH GAMEPLAY.

I love Serious Sam 1, I love pointless killing, no doubt I'll love Serious Sam 2, but it won't be better than 95% of games. If I want a pointless shooter that looks AMAZING I'll play Painkiller. Because right now, Painkiller is still the best Shoot-em up game...and of course that's IN MY OPINION!

serious sam has a story... monsters are running around... shoot them

it also has a point... mindless fun shooting everything that moves until it stops moving

The game has subpar graphics and the plot will probably be beyond simple, assuming they bother to have a plot at all this time. The gameplay is largely derivative, and the simple FPS formula they're rehashing has been done to death.

That said, I loved the first game. The lack of depth or eye candy wasn't a flaw, it was simply a condition of the game's existence. It's just the way it was, a necessary part of the game's character. The parts came together to form a unique take on an old idea, with all the elements focused on one result: the joy of fragging.

Serious Sam isn't intelligent or pretty. It doesn't have to be.

graphics subpar? what kind of smoke are you cracking?

anyway this game runs great... 1152x864 ?xAA (low setting in game guessing 2x) 8xAF most the stuff on high (i may bump textures up to max to see how it runs)

maybe i should give specs too

My review from Shacknews, censored for Massassi:

WHAT A TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT

Why this game sucks:
1) Sam stopped being a badass after SS1. Henceforth he sports a more metro look instead of the original total badass.
2) Way to corny. All of the weapons and enemies are total cornball with bright colors and lame sound effects.
3) The sounds of the weapons are god awful. They sport no power to them. All of the weapons in the original Sam had *awesome* sound effects and sounded like they were going to f--- sh-- up. Everything here sounds like a pea shooter.
4) The weapons are god awful. Again with the cheesy cornball sci-fi crap. The original Sam was more or less badass guns with the exception of the laser gun. Chainsaw, double barrel shotty, rocket launcher that looked badass, chaingun, etc.
5) Everything is too damn happy. The original Sam was indeed bright, but nothing about it was f---ing happy.
6) Invisible walls everywhere. WTF?

Basically the game is just too happy and cornball compared to the first, which *WAS* undeniably badass despite how ridiculous it sometimes got. The whole mood now is totally gone. No longer are you the sole badass sent back in time to f--- sh-- up with hardcore weapons. You're now cheesy metro Sam with some LOL SILLY weapons fighting utterly retarded and unscary monsters.

It's like going from duke nukem to UT2K4+LOLSILLY.

As a huge fan of the first game (and less so the second, but it was still pretty good), I'm hugely disappointed. Hell, I even ran an editing site for a year which had a pretty decent user base (Serious Editing).

*sigh*

Uh I don't see a big difference in the attitude of the game (except maybe the parrots... but they get blown up anyway), how you could determine it based on a single demo level (I mean, I'm sure the first level is the least "badass"), and, most importantly, how any of what you listed would instantly make it a bad game. How?

Also, it wouldn't be the same if it had SUPER DUPER GRAPHICS. The art style doesn't require it.

SHUT UPPPPPPP! AAAAGHHH! I hate it when people say this! OF COURSE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO AN OPINION, no one in there right mind would ever approach a statement claiming that you don't... Freelancer never meant that at all, it should be obvious!!!

Sorry man that line just kinda irks me :). We cool.

Dude, the laser gun was the best weapon in the game besides the cannonball (and maybe grenade launcher)

Man, I really need to go back and play the original. I THINK I SHALL.

It's possible that these weapons aren't the weapons that will be used through-out the entire game. Although, I haven't read up on it, just stating a possibility. So, try not to jump to conclusions on rating an entire game based on its demo. Play the full game first.

I bought the gold edition for 10 bucks at Fry's about a month ago. To my surprise it had the first and second encounters :D... I didn't even know the second one existed! It rocks.

I really think this game could have been a lot better had they actually put a bit more time in to the animations.

For one, when you shoot the guns, there is no sort of movement, recoil, or anything. All you see is the gun shoot some sort of plasma/bullet/rocket but you as the character in the first person view have no reaction to it what so ever.

Secondly, the enemies, especially the land ones, really have no movement what so ever. (with the exception of a few humanoid ones). Most of the alien type creatures that run around litterally just sit there and shoot (also have no animation while shooting). I had my settings on the maximum settings, and yet sometimes the LOD settings when enemies were somewhat far away they looked like bumpmapped sprites.

Really, the only thing that dissapointed me was the lack of reality when it came to the movements/animations. Also, as mentioned above, the sounds were a bit corny, and lacked a real punch or explosive blast that the first game had. The graphics were actually pretty decent, and looked really cool with the cityscape and shadows in some areas.

I consider this to be (at least for me), a game that would be fun to pick up when the price goes down from the release price.

What happened? I'm a huge fan of the first and second Serious Sam games, yet this just comes off as mediocre at best. Even killing enemies is very unsatisfying for some reason.. maybe the goofy gib effect?

I totally agree about the mood of the game changing for the worst. SS/SS:SE was quirky and all, but from what I've seen of SS2 they've gone way over the top to the point of stupidity. I'll wait to get the full game to pass final judgement.

I'll buy anything with co-op, but I want my cool kamikazes back. :(

Ok, my thoughts after play the demo:

First of all, that was one SHORT demo. I think it only took me 15 minutes to beat it. My first complaint is that the theme of the game is rather goofy (as in its more goofy than SS1, that is). It was like "UT2k4 meets Disney's Toon Town". So many bright colors all over the place and the guns themselves reminded me of UT2k4 (both in style and how stiff they animated). The level itself had some puzzles that annoyed me. I absolutely HATE jumping puzzles and the fact this level had one really annoyed me. Also, those beam gates didn't really make sense to me at first. I still don't get how they got trigger to open (perhaps it was from the number of monster I had to kill?) so that got me annoyed. The only part of the level that I thought was interesting was the vehicle part. It reminded me of Halo a bit. Speaking of Halo, I noticed that the netisca (or whatever its called) actually have a voice this time. Its also a rip from halo since its an AI that happens to be a woman. Other than that, it was an ok game but just a tad goofy compared to the first game.

Here's my review:

- The graphics are superb.
- Unfortunately, more than about 10 enemies on the screen at a time and I got a lot of framerate issues. (which totally defeats the point of Serious Sam)
- The weapons are largely the same. The rocket launcher is still in there, machine gun(s), minigun, shotgun, double (or, in this case, octal) barrelled shotgun, etc. There are a few new ones which I like.
- Sam does look more fruity now. Damn.
- Basically, it was quite fun. If I can tweak my settings so I can have more enemies on the screen at once, it will be pretty much just like SS and SS:SE.
