2+ Mhz SDRAM processor anyone?
2005-09-21, 5:33 PM #1
Anyone has a 2.4+ Mhz processor (they would like to sell) that would work on an SDRAM (as opposed to DDR) motherboard? I've got 1.4 ATM, and it's bloody slow. Can't really get a new one, since apparently, no stores have old SDRAM parts. Is it worth the effort?

Oh, and my comp's basically Intel Pentium 4, 1.4 MHZ, 512 RAM, GeForce Fx 5200. The only thing that bugs me to extreme is how slow the processor is. No Doom 3 for me. Or is it the graphics card? Anybody knows?

Yeah, no kidding, 1.4 MHz is very slow... like slower than my calculator. ;)

I have a 1.6 ghz processor and I run DOOM3 just fine with high settings.. I do have a nice video card though.

Uh, yeah, Ghz. I explode. What's your video card's name, Freelancer?

Doom 3 runs almost solely through the video card. The cpu's mostly just used for the sound.

hence why my doom3 runs like a piece of ****

1.0 GB SSDDDR RAM
128 MB nVidia FX 5200

I'm saving up for a new one

So it's the bloody card then, not the processor. Oh, and I just checked ATI's pricelist, and apparently, 9800 PRO is 200 dollars. I could probably manage to get it for 180 somewhere around here. My biggest problem's that with an SDRAM-only motherboard, I don't think I'll be able to use it.

When I bought my 5200-shame, I bought it because the local techie said there was no way any of the better cards would work without DDR.

One more thing. How does Half-Life 2 run on your specs, Freelancer? Thanks in advance, dude.

I don't know much to help you, but overclockersclub may answer your questions.

Much better than DOOM3. I'm talking all high settings, 1024X768X6xAA, full shaders, shadows, the whole nine yards, at framerates good enough that I've never felt the need to even check what FPS I was getting.

Wait, what type of RAM you use determines what type of video card you can have? WTF? My video card has been in rigs from 128mb of PC133 all the way up to 1gb of PC2700 DDR.

(I should really update it)

EDIT: Even with my **** box, which is:
2.0ghz athlon xp
geforce 4 ti4200
256mb (my 512mb sticks went bad) DDR

HL2 runs fairly well (constant >30 fps, recommended settings, DX8)

The type of RAM you use in your system has absolutely no influence on the type of video card you can buy.

All you need to make sure you get is an AGP card, as your motherboard does not have PCI Express.

Dude, the DDR stuff simply DOESN'T FIT in my motherboard's slots.

I see. Thing is, new and good cards only fit in SDRAM DDR boards. Mine is just like that, except of the DDR part. Meaning the slots are shaped differently. But anyway, maybe it's not all that bad, and the techie I've talked to wasn't very competent or whatever.

AGP is AGP. The video card slots have been the same for years. Just, as said before, don't buy a PCI-E card.

I don't even know the bloody difference TBH. Not too good with tech, you see. So anyway, guys. If I understand correctly, even if my motherboard does not support DDR, I can still get the AGP-based card, even thought it's DDR, and it'll run (and fit)?

Again, as you have probably noticed by now, I have only a very faint idea of what all this stuff means.

Right. I found this site:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?page=2&Nav=|c:318|&Sort=0&Recs=10

It sells AGP-based cards, ridiculously cheap.

BTW, what exactly is the difference between AGP and PCI-E? I'm reading Wiki's entry on "Advanced Graphics Processing Unit" ATM, but it doesn't seem to help. Maybe it's the lack of nicotine in my blood.

The difference is in bandwidth (data transfer rate). At the moment there is no REAL benefit, but eventually video cards will be begging for all the bandwidth they can eat and AGP won't cut it. Nvidia's and ATI's lastest cards don't even have AGP versions, PCI-E only.
