What would you do on a team project?
2005-09-21, 8:02 PM #1
In my economics class we were divided into groups to work on a major project. But first we were given a small mini reading project on a book (of our choice off a list). Ultimately my team chose a book about Enron. The report was to read through certain parts of the books, ask 3 questions then use the book to find them.

However, my team didn't do jack. I chose the book, I found 3 questions to ask, I found 3 answers and I wrote the entire frigging report.

Keep in mind this is a college intermediate level economics class, and usually people do not take it until taking the first course. Now, in the sheet describing the assignment, it says "Any member of the team who does not participate fully in the assignment may be at the mercy of the other team members in terms of the grade the team believes the non fully participating member earned..."

Now, there were 4 people in my team. One didn't show up (had to work), one kept talking to a friend of his when we were trying to work and eventually left after like 20 minutes, and the other, who is the only one who did anything (and even then her only question was "Uh...why did they take the money...?" is the only one who actually stayed.

In the end I dunno if I should turn in the paper by myself and not let them get a grade, only let the girl get a grade, quit the team and let them get a zero and make them do the next project on their own.

What do you think?
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

Ohhhhh... I'd totally flunk them. It's the only way they will learn, really. They shouldn't get credit for what they didn't do.

I say, punish them... Not in a vindictive way. The details are up to you.

But... talk to 'em first, maybe?

If they didn't nothing, then they get nothing. Besides, stop them from leeching for next time.

The girl gets part credit for being there, and the others get nothing.

So should I flunk them and switch groups as well?
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

If you can switch groups, I'd do it. It's got to be a pain to do it all by yourself.

I've had group projects where some people didn't contribute. We told the professor such and let him/her deal with it.

theres a profit to be made, tell them that unless they give you 20 bucks you're going to turn the paper in by yourself and let them get the F, that might be enough to make some money and get yourself a good grade

I had the exact same situation when I was on my first course of business management and administration. I think we had to make a presentation in marketing. I ended up doing EVERYTHING from scratch, but who cares.

It was interesting.

I suggest you turn it in and let them pretend you all did it together. But next time, don't work with them. If you don't really care about them, that is. There's really no point in being an arsehole.

Oh, and switch groups, as well, most definitly. These people were idiotic, and a) should get no creadit for work they didn't do (obviously except the girl, she gets part credit), and b) should not have the opportunity to work with you again. you gave them a chance and are obviously a very hard worker, they messed up a chance to have you on their team.

[edit] Uhh.. that '***' is supposed to be 'cue eff tee'. why is it censored.....

Also, may I add, failing someone just because I can would make me feel pretty bad about myself. It's just not something you do. True, they're not your kind of people or whatever, get a new clique, but don't exercise your ego. Not gonna result in anything nice.

Talk to the prof and let him or her decide. Theres a chance your group members will go to him after getting a failing grade so he might as well be in on it in the first place.

Yeah, definitely talk to the professor. Is this the first group project your class has done? Your professor might know about them being slack from previous assignments.

These guys sound like jerks. Basically, you have nothing to lose by talking to your professor.

But if you do that, you might gain some dark side points! The Jedi are supposed to help people out and not accept rewards--

its not 'just because he can'. they did not do any work, and so they do not deserve a decent grade or, in this case, any grade at all. that's simply how it is. people should be graded on the work they do, not the work they were supposed to do and decided they didn't want to

[edit] jsut wanted to say, you should also talk to the professor, of cource, to let him know what these people did. i wouldn't think it would be a good idea to simply omit their names when you hand it in.

Well everyone put there name on it, but I told him the truth about how I got screwed on the project. He told me I can talk to other groups and try to switch over, or do a "commerical" where he tells the class about what happened and see if anyone wants to take me.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.
