Windows XP activation question...
2005-09-25, 8:49 AM #1
I've recently installed my Windows XP, and I've got like 23 days to activate it. My question is, since I have like 5 computers in my house, is there a way to put the OS on all systems, and activate them without having to buy other copies, and, of course, legally.
Nothing to see here, move along.

No. You'll have to buy licenses for all of the other computers.

How much would that cost me?

Roughly the same per license as you spent on the one copy you have now.

You could buy 3 retail copies, and use each key to buy another key through microsoft for a discounted price, but from the keys I've tested it's been ~$180 for a discounted Home license and ~$260 for a discounted Pro license

EULA states: one copy, one computer. No ifs, ands, or buts.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

By that, Kirby simply means that people just use the OS that came with their computers. :em321:

Or Linux.

If you had finished the Massassi MMORPG and sold it to all of us, you'd have the money to buy extra Windows licences. >.>

Get a friend at college to buy you like 10 licenses for 10 bucks. Colleges always sell discounted MS software.

What I really hate about Windows XP's activation is that if you were to radically change hardware of your system (like installing a new motherboard) the OS will sometimes think you are reinstalling Windows on another computer so it'll force you to resubmit for activation. I had this happen to me a lot while trying to install my motherboard multiple times because of an error. I had to call Microsoft to tell them that I was just upgrading my computer and not making pirate copies in order to get my activation key to reset.

Thats probably to prevent you from ghosting your drive onto another PC.
