CoD 2 Demo is Out

There's some linkage

Overall Impressions: Well, it looks pretty damn good. Runs really well, with the only slowdown coming at the end with some mowing down of MG42. The models didn't look all that finished to me. The music at the end is really damn good, of course. However, I don't know if because it was in a really enclosed setting, but it didn't really feel Call of Duty to me. The atmosphere and the..erm...hectic-ness...wasn't there.

IT was still fun to play though.

COD2 is a resourse hog. I can barely play it on my 9800 pro. Although I don't think this is what you'd call "playable".

i wonder why it doesn't run super great on a 9800 pro... maybe because it's a new game and the 9800Pro is really starting to show it's age now

I assume the infinite health thing is a part of the demo only?

I don't think they have health packs. Take a lot of damage in a short period of time and you die. Play on the harder difficulties and you die in a shot or two.

Yeah, but you can get really close to death, survive, wait a while, do the same thing.

I'm pretty sure the smoke is 2d. It's not volumetiric; it's just a few ploygons with moving pics of smoke on them, along with a little bit of volumetric smoke.

Did anyone notice any improvements in AI? They made a big deal about this for CoD2.

But I had to witness a problem that bothered me so much in the first game. I hate watching my whole team die in front of an enemy MG. Shouldn't the new AI system do something about this? wtf.

It runs smooth on my 9700 pro with medium settings just fine.

It causes my Athlon XP 3200+ and 9700 to stop in their tracks without the "Force DX7" option enabled. It seems they added some fancy DX8 or DX9 effects that are either way too intensive for older hardware or were very poorly programmed.

Mwehehe.... I'm gonna kill my computer. It could barely handle Doom III at medium settings, I woner how this will do. >:D
DO NOT WANT.

It runs considerably better than Doom III. I'm fairly sure it's the same engine as CoD. I still saw hideous lightmaps.

Are you sure about that? I thought CoD was an improved Q3 engine.

Actually yeah, it ran smooth as butter, I never experienced a single slowdown. The only problem is that it won't enable the pretty specular effects for me. :(

It was. CoD2 has its own new engine.

Oh. Well then, hideous lightmaps still.

They forgot to include a physics engine. That truck and tank scene was totally scripted. No way to reproduce that in MP or anything.
2005-09-27, 5:36 PM #28
There were some physics, I think. When bodies fly, they react to the environment before landing on the ground for good...I think.

But physics with so many things and people in the level would drag down the CPU.

Oh, so you know what their final product is like from a one-level demo. K, thanks for that information.

I could've sworn things like "Excellent game", "Really love the smoke", and the various comments on the graphics were positive :P

Either way, it's easier for humans to be negative anyways.

Ok, maybe "no one" was kind of broad... but there seems to be alot of negativity for something that I think is pretty damned cool...

A couple weeks ago I pre-ordered this. It got me a T-shirt and a five dollar off coupon.

Sweet deal.

This game looks awesome, although I haven't played the demo yet.

I heard that a lot of the graphics settings were locked in the demo? Is this true, and if so what kind of limitations are present? Resolution, model detail, AA, etc?
2005-09-27, 9:08 PM #40
I thought it was pretty fun. It ran okay on my machine, just had to turn off AA and force DX7. Time to upgrade I suppose.
