My brother and I both just recently purchased Laptop computers. His is a Hewlett Packard (I do not know the model number) and mine is a Compaq Presario R3000.

My brother's has an Athlon XP-M, and mine is an Athlon 64.

Mine is supposed to be running at 1.8 GHz... (I dont know his) but when I look in the properties for my Computer it has displayed 517 MHz, 701 MHz, and 1.79 Ghz. I just ran AMD's CPU Information program (black background, green text, real basic, not their more advanced CPUID program) and it says it's at 1,595 Mhz... haven't seen it fluctuate at all, but I just ran it a few minutes ago.

I only mentioned my brother's computer because he too has the same problem (different numbers, but the same problem)

Since I don't know a lot about mobile processors I thought maybe some of you might know if this is at all normal...

I've been told that the processors will change their speed depending on the usage... But I don't really believe it...

Altho I can see it being a feature to help save on battery usage.

So any ideas? Anything would be helpful.

It's true that some are programmed to throttle the cpu and hard drive when on battery power. When you hook it up to the outlet, you should be getting full power, and it should report something VERY CLOSE (within 10mhz) of your processor's advertised speed. If you're not getting that, consult your manufacturer. Either they lied and sent you a slower chip, or you didn't carefully read how many megahertz your processor was actually running. Whenever you get AMD chips, the number they tell you is BS. For example, if you buy an 1800+, it's normal for it to run at ~1500 megahertz because of AMDs crappy "marketing" folks.

Bah. Lets not bring marketing into this. Intel has done more than its share of rotten advertising.

Guys guys. Don't turn it in to an AMD v. Intel war.

Just a thought for it happened to me. You might want to check BIOS for voltage settings on CPU. I'm not sure if CPU voltages can be set on laptops. Reason I suggest this because I have an AMD Athlon 2000 which is a 1.67 GHz. For a while it was running 1.25 GHz until I did some investigation and I found that the voltages were set improperly and my chip was running slower.

It's an Athlon 64 3000+ clocked at 1.8 GHz... so I know I didn't read that wrong.

I just checked it now that I switched from battery power to AC Power.. it's right where it should be.

Thanks for at least confirming that they are made to do this.

Brian--that's because AMD's can process more per second than Intel, bogomips don't lie [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif].

Yah, I've heard of this problem with crappy voltage settings. I don't know how to check it on laptops though...

That would have to prove that Intel did, indeed, put the "um" in Pentium. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I thought the 3000 ran at 2ghz, must be the laptop version I suppose... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/confused.gif]

I have an AMD, and it's running at the advertised speed: 2.16 GHZ.

I would never overclock it b/c my comp runs on the hot side already... overclocking would make it much worse.

I have an AMD Athlon XP 3000+ in my Desktop, and it runs at 2.10 GHz. The Athlon 64 3000+ runs at 1.8 GHz, I've noticed the 64 speeds at the same 'model number' don't run at the same speed as their XP Counter-part.
