The Story, as seen on /.
I'm going to look beyond the fact that everything seems to be running Linux nowdays, including soldiers' electronic equipment (also from /.). Actually, that's probably a very good thing. The more things that are open source, the more people benefit.
The article did make some valid points about IBM's strategy though. They're working very hard to push Linux so that they can sell their consulting services, hardware, and web software.
However, consulting services can be replaced with a handful of in-house researchers that read and report on the Linux docs they find online, and offer training for others themselves. IBM's web software that they are trying to sell, such as their database server already has free alternatives, such as MySQL. It seems like their hardware will be the most compelling seller for them, but there's nothing to say that people can't run Linux on Dells or HPs, or self-built computers for that matter. I know that I would not consider buying IBM's hardware just because they supported Linux.
I want to see IBM succeed in its Linux ventures, but I think the flaws pointed out in the article are major issues that IBM needs to address before they stake the entire company on this new strategy.
