I've never understood why it's shrimp on the bbq. I mean, we call them prawns here, don't we? Or am I just nuts?

That comes about because what Americans generally call shrimps well call prawns, so when they wrote the dialogue for Crocadile Dundee it was 'throw a shrimp on the bbq' in order to make sense to the American market. Or at least so I was told.

The actual difference between shrimps and prawns is not very much. There are so many varieties of each both big and small that you cant really define 'these' as shrimps and 'those' as prawns. The main difference has something to do with the way they mate.

At any rate the prawns that we get over here in Australia are locally harvested and relatively large, whereas we dont have any good edible shrimps so what we put on pizzas are small shrimps imported from Asia. Over in America the local prawns that everyone eats are small, but the shrimps are big.
