Paranormal stuff...
2005-10-19, 12:20 AM #1
I'm of the opinion that 90% of it isn't real. Yeah. Ghosts, psychics, ESP... I think it's all fake. I suppose I've got a 'prove-it' attitude. So far, the only thing that I have managed to see for myself that exists is EVP, or Electronic Voice Phenomenon.

What are your opinions on paranormal stuff, and EVP in particular?

Do anybody see that new ghost video on Ebaums World? It does kinda look like a hoax, but it's still creepy. Does anyone have any background info on it?

I hate all those dumb paranormal shows on Sci-fi and Travel channels. It is scarier how bad those shows are and what a big deal the channels make of them.

EVP is just like the people that 'see' Jesus in a pancake or soiled bedsheets. You are constructing something percievable out of something random, and that perception will usually be of something familiar to you, like a face. It is simply because we spend a lot of time seeing and hearing very non-random things, so when we come across something that is random, we try to construct something non-random out of it simply because that is what we are used to*. With pancake-Jesus, it is constructing a human face out of pancake mixture. With EVP, it is constructing human sounds out of random white noise (possibly accentuated by interference from radio signals). I think it's called pareidolia.

* There are two possible reasons for this. The first is that it may infact be a evolutionary trait, to recognise human faces and sounds - infants that don't would be less likely to find a parent, and die. The second is that it is constant reinforcement from the environment around you.

How do they know it's Jesus? No one knows what Jesus looked like.

that ebaums thing was cool but way too easy to pull off as a hoax, someone could have just been lying in the field until someone gave her a signal to appear

Yeah, our brains are basically hard-wired to look for patterns in any sort of data, whether it be white noise on a cassette tape or random blotches on a pancake. Especially patterns that suggest the presence of another human, such as a face or a voice.

I guess its one of those "you had to be their" experiences. People claim they've been shoved, slapped, touched, and tapped by spirits and they leave a cold spot on where they touched you. I know Echo hates the shows on Sci-Fi but whenever they catch something on tape, they try to prove what they saw and there have been a couple occurences that can't be done by a human.

Besides, I hardly ever even address Rob.

I'm sure that most of those ghost sightings are fake, and that ALL "alien abductions" are fake. As was said before, anybody with the right equipment can pull off a "real" paranormal event.

I'm sure there's life out there, intelligent or not. But I don't think that Earth has ever been visited by extraterrestrials.

I believe in energy and Nature. If this includes compact energy in one space to form a "ghost" then okay. If not, then nah.

I'm very neutral on some things :(

Reminds me of the time that, when it first came out, War of the Worlds was read over the radio. A good chunk of the population tuned in halfway through and thought earth was actually being invaded. :D

Hah! Me and a friend often times play a game when we're out - one of us pictures heads or tails in his head, the other has to guess. Then the other one thinks of something, etc...

We had like a streak of 9 correct in a row the first time we did it. Then I guessed wrong - must be because my concentration slipped ;) :(

It was 20 years after the book came out. They made up news reports about it.

-Aisde from that, it's true. Some people commited suicide, I believe.

No-one committed suicide, but there was a large-scale public distress. It is worth noting that this was in 1938, and the public generally thought that the invasion was not Martian but rather by German troops.
