Actually, this is the hurricane with the highest pressure on record... it went from tropical storm to CAT 5 in 2 days... I think it's worth watching.

From what I've read, Hurricanes (much like many natural disasters) seem to have a cycle of approximatly 20 years. Last I heard we reached the peak of the Hurricane cycle at 15 years this year. I'm guessing this would explain why a lot of the former records go back a few decades I guess.

Katrina was a 175 MPH Cat. 5 storm then it fizzled to Cat. 4 as it made landfall

Rita was a 175 MPH Cat. 5 storm then it fizzled to Cat. 3 as it made landfall

Wilma is a 160 MPH Cat. 5 storm then it will fizzle to nothing more than a strong tropical storm maaaaybe still a hurricane.

We can only hope that jack thompson is on his roof where many southern idiots tend to be in the middle of tropical storms.

I do love the thing on the news during these events.

Hurricane hits Florida! Supernatural event! These things don't happen 4 or 5 times a year!

I think you mean lowest pressure. The lower the pressure the more damage it will cause. Latest update shows 892 mb.

Agreed. Going from 5 -> 4 still means the hurricane is packing quite the wallop as the unfortunate souls of New Orleans and Biloxi had to bear witness. Perhaps better wording on my behalf.

Point I was trying to stress is that the media is portraying it as "HURICAEN 5 UR ALL GOING 2 DIE!!!11" but the last two impacting storms lost strength. And I suspect this one will too. Hurricanes are no laughing matter but media outlets are using these storms as ratings boosters ergo overhype will ensue. Let weather people do their jobs first!

And the non-stop media coverage doesn't help, either. Not to mention the fact that could be using video footage from any hurricane and it'll look exactly the same. Wind, rain, flooding. Why do we need "reporters" to tell us what a hurricane does?

Yeah, that's true... how do we know which hurricane it is? Hell, I could probably post this picture and say "OMG I took this picture when trying to escape from New Orleans after Katrina" and there'd be someone that would believe me...
