I was getting ready to go to work this morning and stepped outside, and found this on the ground:
It's a .308 Winchester, which is a civilian version of the 7.62 × 51 mm NATO rifle cartridge.
.308: http://www.reloadbench.com/cartridges/308w.html
7.62: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7.62_x_51_mm_NATO

Anyway, I did some research and found this to be rather interesting, so I thought some of you might want to see this. I don't really have a specific reason for posting, but everyone post your bullet/rifle preferences, and we'll have a jolly discussion about killing devices. :)
Cheers.

I've only ever shot .22s and shotguns, but I'm rather fond of shotgun shells. They're so satisfying to load into a shotgun.

I don't use bullets; I prefer plasma bolts.

2005-10-20, 3:34 PM #5
well the .308 is often used in bolt-action rifles.. and there's nothing more fun to load than a bold-action. :p
(the military 7.62mm appears to be used primarily in sniper rifles, but also in in m60's and a few other machine guns)

Hmm, and oddly enough, the one I have is lead-tipped. I don't seem able to find any pictures on Google that are lead-tipped.

Never shot a gun, so no preference.
nope.
2005-10-20, 3:39 PM #7
Rather interesting. I wonder who had dropped it and why...

Edit: I have only shot 7.62x39 mm bullets (assault rifle).

Edit2:: ... and of course 12,7x108 mm heavy machine gun, but that's a different thing...

I have always prefered the 12 guage shotgun. Just fun to shoot. :)

whoop, here's one with a lead tip:
http://www.ammo-one.com/1-308FL.jpg

Anyway, yeah.. I was walking along the sidewalk outside my apartment. I don't know how it got there. Then, hunting is rather popular up here, so it's not much of a stretch to think that someone probably just dropped it on his way out to load up the truck for a hunting trip.

I'm trying to decide if I should hit it really hard with a hammer... :|

7.62x54R, .54 slug, .53 ball (balls are smaller because they are wrapped in a cloth patch before being put into the barrel)

I've shot 303's 22's and 12 gauges, all in the same outing. I had a grand old time laying waste to my little green army men. The 12 gauge was most satisfying all around (didn't leave much of the poor bastards left), but I got my absolutely most satisfying shot with the 303. While taking out a guy's feet, I split the board in half, and all the men went flying.

For my next round, I'm going to fill a Barbie doll's head with jam, place her in front of a board, and watch the horror unfold. Yes, I'm a sick puppy.

Good times.

Ehy Sarn, are you sure you didn't find that in your mailbox with your name on it?

My silencer wouldn't screw on, and my clip fell out before I could plug one in your head, Sarn, so when I saw a car approaching, I ducked into the bushes and ran off. Better luck next time, right?

As I'm thinking about it, I'm wondering if a lead-tipped bullet would be practical for hunting. Wouldn't the lead poison the meat?

I really didn't think they made lead tipped bullets anymore. I'm pretty sure they're all copper tipped, with maybe a little bit of lead in the innards.
2005-10-20, 5:34 PM #23
My Dad's got a .357 break open rifle that is hella fun to shoot..and I'm pretty accurate with it. But then again, my mom (my MOM) bought a 9mm Hi-Point rifle that kicks *** too...and then I've got my .22.

Oh, and finding the bullet right on your front lawn or whatever..that's odd. Maybe God's gun jammed and he dropped a bullet? :P
I had a blog. It sucked.

I'm assuming yes, but I may be wrong.

some pople hunt with shotguns... buckshot (or slugs) are generally made of lead...

also people do hunt with black powder rifles (in indiana there's a part of deer season that's black powder only) and as you can see in my pic above... the ammo is lead

you won't get enough lead in the meat to worry about it just from a bullet...

Illinois is Black Powder/Shotgun/Pistol only. :( But I guess one shot's all you really GET if you're using any gun, so black powder is ok. I'm going black powder this year for deer season.

For the relatively clueless Brits here who rarely ever see firearms, why tip a bullet with a soft dense metal like lead?

I have a Swedish Mauser 6.5x55. I've only used this gun, .22, and good ol' shotguns.

I haven't shot anything but a BB gun, but I really want to buy and shoot a muzzleloader of some sort.

The way I see it, the only really challenging form of deer hunting is bowhunting, muzzleloader, or handgun. Bow and handgun because you have to entice it to get close enough to shoot, muzzleloader because you only get one shot. Hunting with a regular rifle just seems like it wouldn't be as fun. Then again, I've never been hunting, so I don't really know.

I have a compound bow, but I've also shot BB, .22, muzzleloading, 12-gauge, Gerand, Luger, and hopefully soon my friend's AK-47.

The .700 nitro express :D .....

I wish. Seriously, I've shot a 12 gauge, a 20 gauge, a .22, a .30/06, and a bow.

My wish list would be to try out the first gun, a P90, and a Protecta.
