That was true up till windows xp. You no longer need to restart for those things.
Not that you need to change that stuff often anyway.

Well either the mac you are using sucks cause its 50 years old, or some one hasnt updated the software.

I use Photoshop, Quark, Indesign, Final Cut, Filemaker Pro, and a whole load of other software on my Mac all day and it never crashes, I bet you were this mac is in a PC based company with little or no IT support for Apple Mac, and the PC Techies dont know whats going on.
The networking is the best I have seen in 10.4, and the easiest, I dont have to restart every time I change the networking preferances, unlike windows which needs to be restarted every time you change work group or ip.

Ive been using Macs for 8 years along side Windows and I find my self using my PC less and less.
I have to deal with people all day that asume that because something is different to Windows and its not the normal way of doing things it is therefore rubbish, My name is Paul, and i Work for Apple Computer.

A. We use G5s with some of the latest hardware in them available.
B. We have the latest version of OSX.
C. We have certified Mac techicians, from Apple themselves.
D. I just had terminal crash on me. Twice.
E. Windows does NOT need to be restarted to change IP addresses. You don't even need to log off.
F. If I change workgroups or IPs on the MAC while on any account other than admin, it locks up. More network fun.
G. Still didn't say anything about the ***-backwards GUI (such as no maximizing?!)

There's maximizing, just not in the way you're used to it. Macs have their purpose--I'm convinced it's not for daily use, but for Illustrator, Photoshop and the like.

Yeah. I read an interesting article on Windows Maximizing vs Mac Zooming.

Maximizing, in a way, takes away some of the advantages of a Windowed GUI by preventing easy drag and drop between apps. Zoom is supposed to set the app's size to the programmer's recommended size. They both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Windows actually has features to turn the maximize button into a zoom button, in that applications can specify X, Y, width, and height coords for the "maximized" window. With XP themes it's drawn bad tho, at least in my third-party skin. And I've never seen any program use it.

The restarting with XP is kind of... sporadic.

After doing a lot of extra work with the PCs at my school, and after setting up a Windows Domain at my house I have found:

1) I have had to restart whenever I had to connect to a windows domain, regardless of what it was connected to beforehand, and whenever changing from a Domain back to a workgroup, but not when changing the workgroup it was a part of.

2) I have had to restart when I changed the IPs a few times as well, but from what I was able to figure, it was because I changed the Preferred DNS Server ip.

I will not be using Vista.
I will be using Linux.
