Strange computer issue[s]...

So here's the situation...

There's 5 computers on our network..

My laptop
My desktop
My dad's desktop
My mom's laptop
and my Brother's laptop

My dad's computer, and my laptop both have ZoneAlarm on them, the others do not, but might shortly.

Lately my dad has been getting a blocked access message from the firewall.

It says it blocked access to in-addr (sometimes in-addr.arpa) followed by my brother's laptop's local IP address (not his public IP address).

My laptop has not gotten this message... yet anyway.

Every now and again my dad's computer will also lose access to the internet.

Finally...

Every time Internet explorer is opened on my dad's computer a message pops up saying the firewall blocked access from my dad's computer to the modem's IP address (the modem is also our router... so I guess it's the router's IP address more than the modems). But the strange thing is, I will also get the same message when IE is opened on his computer... in fact I just got it twice a few minutes ago, from the same instance. But this does not happen at all when I open IE on my computer.

I cannot figure out what the cause is thus far.

The settings on the firewall on my dad's comp are exactly the same as they are on my laptop. I've checked all the running programs and services, and no unknown programs are running on any of the computers I've checked (all but my mom's)

My dad's computer seems to be virus-free... I can't get my brother's anti-virus to run... it shows up in the services list in the Task Manager, but the UI and icons don't show up in the task bar or the system tray.

No spy/ad ware at all on any.

I've googled in-addr and in-addr.arpa, but nothing useful came up, but I haven't had a chance to look more deeply.

All comps are running Windows XP Service Pack 1 (except mine, mine are both running Service Pack 2).

Any input as to what might be the cause would really be helpful. If you need more info let me know.

Get a good hardware firewall and get rid of that Zonealarm crap.

The modem has a firewall built into it...

My dad felt the need to download ZoneAlarm, and then when his problems started I downloaded it onto my laptop just to see if it was just his computer or a whole network thing.

And SP2 isn't quite truely out... it's still in preview.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/sp2preview.mspx

I believe the link to download the First Release candidate is there.

It gives IE a pop-up blocker (that works very well mind you, but I have google's toolbar/pop-up blocker installed just-in-case... but it hasn't gotten to any of them, except one, but because I allowed it through IE, but forgot to allow it through google) it also blocks programs from running straight off a web-page (i.e. active-x programs... and this includes the Windows Update software... you have to allow even that through)

However it seems to have a problem opening WMV files (haven't tested MPGs yet) if I go to open it up directly (i.e. pressing open instead of save when the 'download file' dialogue comes up) it brings up the jibberish like it would if you opened it up in notepad... so you have to save it to disk to view it... or at least that's how it's been for my laptop and desktop... I can't say the same for others as I do not know anyone else whose used it.

That's kind of what I've been thinking... but it is on my dad's comp, not mine, so I dont have quite as much control over it... and since he seems to want it installed I figured I'd ask to see if anyone might have any other ideas.

I vote for removal of ZA. Try Agnitum (www.agnitum.com), its an awesome firewall.

I would also run a packet sniffer (Ethereal is good), start up IE and find out just wtf is going on, cause thats pretty funky.

THe freeware version of Zone Alarm really sucks. Zone Alarm Pro is much better, but costs money. I vote for removal of it as well.

Guess what? Yep, that's right. No, no, really, it's right. Think it's wrong? You're right, it's wrong. Know why? 'Cause it is

Kill Zone Alarm. It isn't worth the hassle, especially since you already have a hardware firewall. If you want pop-up blocking and no active-x problems, do what all the smart people do, don't use IE. Use Mozilla, or if you have to, Opera. (I'd pick Mozilla, if just to avoid the stupid banner in Opera.)
