Apathy!
2005-10-25, 12:30 PM #1
The secret to living a happy life is apathy. There’s nothing like looking at something depressing, that you are helpless to fix, sitting back and say, “I don’t care.” I’ve been depressed for awhile for several reasons and recently I’ve improved my mood and life greatly thanks to apathy. I’m usually nervous when taking tests such as the PSAT. But, after applying the proper amount of apathy I was able to approach it with a clear head and did much better than I would have other wise.

Come and join me in the glorious euphoria that is apathy!

:D :p

so why'd you bother posting this

Yeah, that's the good side of apathy. The bad side is when you've missed two out of three math exams in your third year of university and you don't care. :( (As in, you couldn't even be arsed to show up)

You have logic on your side but I don't care. :D

Really, for apathy to be effective, you have to balance it out. There's sort of a knack to it.

My life is awesome; I don't care about other people's problems. Does that make me apathetic or just a self-centred *******?

Apathy is the bane of American culture, and the enemy of democracy.

I'd explain why, but I can't be bothered with it.

Uh no, apathy is the key to leading an apathetic life.
If you want happiness you need to get a little more excited about life.

Like I say, there's kack to it. Total apathy won't work. I should write a book on this. :p

And of course, I'm not being totaly serious either.
2005-10-25, 4:58 PM #18
no of course not. and that, by the way, is the real secret to leading a happy life. Never be entirely serious. If you can always stay a few steps back from any given situation and find the humor in it, then you will always lead a happy low-stress life.

For example, rather than getting pissed at someone for not seeing something the way you do, you should instead take a few steps back (metaphorically) and enjoy the fact that you're more clever than them.

(and for the record, the above post is an example of this. Anyone that catches the irony will understand)

Yeah, I could tell you weren't being serious. But I had to say it anyway.

I like you. This thread is awesome, because I've been thinking the exact same thing lately. I've been going through a lot of problems, and one day I just sat down, thought about everything, I just said out loud to myself "I don't care." It's been great... I've always admired people who have that laid-back attitude on life. I also love the tip "you should instead take a few steps back (metaphorically) and enjoy the fact that you're more clever than them." I seem to be doing that more and more... is that a bad thing?

I think Sarn is a bit more right. It's more about not being totally serious, rather than not caring. Of course, it's almost exactly the same thing, but "apathy" just sounds so... so negative

Not that the disctinction matters in the end. :p

This reminds me of a joke:

An old man turned one hundred and ten, so a few newsreporters came to his house and interviewed him.
One of the reporters noticed how spry he was despite his extreme old age and asked "How do you stay so energetic and youthful?"

The old man smiled and said "they key to a long happy life is to never argue with anybody"

The newsreporter couldn't help but scoff at this "Oh come on, surely trheres more to it then that? Like eating right and sleeping regularly, that sort of thing?"

The old man just smiled and said "Yes I suppose you're right"

Decidedly not. Apathy is like Yoga. It is good for the mind and soul.

The real way to live a happy life is to kill hookers.
2005-10-27, 2:18 PM #28
In my earlier years, I didn't konw what apathy was because I was too lazy to look it up. I suppose that's irony though. Man, I love irony.
2005-10-27, 2:23 PM #29
apathy makes you a boring person. hi, boring person.

I definitely see your point, but this is my theory of ethics nowadays: http://forums.massassi.net/vb3/showthread.php?t=34615 . I think it's more rock 'n roll, although some directed apathy can definitely be pimpstyle as well.
