w00t! This news is 1000000x better than Macro_Rosh's telekinetic powers.

Downloading now. I realized again how slow Valve servers are during alot of traffic.

That level was so short. I guess that's why they call it a "HDR demo" instead of flat-out new singleplayer level.

Anyone else notice how it said "download lost coast demo" ?

Does that mean this isn't hte full lost coast?

No, it's gotta be a typo. The level is too short to make a demo out of it, so I hear.

75 mins left.

2005-10-27, 5:25 PM #11
Valve said it was going to be around 15 minutes of gameplay, maybe less.

I'm just glad it was still really fun. Since I couldn't see any of the new tech, I just played it like a normal level.

Also, the level features some nice lighting form the sun. When a cloud goes in front of the sun, the level gets a bit darker.

I meet everything but the video card requirements, however, I'm loading it and waiting to play
2005-10-27, 6:15 PM #19
Pfft, the doom3 engine was better.

*runs*

in all seriousness, I couldn't see the effects of hte lighting, and unfortunately I couldn't play it long cause I have a nightclass, I'll try to pay more attention later tonight.

You might have to go into options and enable the HDR features.

so it does tone down pretty quick? it had better :)
2005-10-27, 7:00 PM #24
If you don't have an X800XL or 6800GT or better don't even bother. :p Even with almost every thing turned down I didn't get out of the 10fps range with my poor 9800 pro.

It was buggy too, real buggy. With all the time they had they could have tested it too.
2005-10-27, 7:01 PM #25
It worked well for me, but I don't meet the RAM reccomendation. It froze randomly :(

Your 9800 Pro must be broken. I got around 20 - 30 fps on HIGHEST EVERYTHING with my 9600 XT. (1 GB RAM, 2.0GHz Processor)

So it's dynamic? Why don't you post a picture after 'your eyes' have adjusted then? Because I don't believe you.

It's Valve, they don't test anything.

does this mean i have to reinstall hl2 to play it. ugh.
Take that there and put it in here
2005-10-27, 8:20 PM #31
I could play this fine at my home comp (3.4 ghz, 1 GB RAM, NVidia 6800) but my laptop (1.8 ghz, 512 MB RAM, ATI mobile crap) will probably suffer as it renders the Lost Coast.

Who cares? Me likey screenshots. ME DOWNLOAD NOW.
2005-10-27, 8:21 PM #32
No, but it will need to redownload the engine and the common resources (weapons, textures, etc) anyway.

It played fine on my FX 5200 with everything on low, HDR disabled. Only a few fps hiccups in a few isolated places. AN FX 5200 OUTPERFORMED OBI_KWIET'S 9800 PRO.

Although in fairness I suppose he could have been running in DX9.0 with HDR. I was running in DX8.0 without HDR.

Will HDR now run in HL2? Cause that will be nifty

valve would need to do alot of work to get HDR working in HL2

2005-10-27, 9:28 PM #36
Yeah, some of you people with the older video cards and good fps. It's really to show HDR, if you have it disabled or are using direct x 8 or 8.1, its just going to look like a normal level to you.

The level is really buggy though.

If you save, then load the game - the soldiers you killed are all respawned by lifeless and you can walk through them.

Still, it was free. w00t!

Athlon 64
1Gb RAM
x800XL 256MB

Ran it at 1280x768, Full HDR, 4x/8x. And it ran pretty well. God that church was gorgeous, especially when the windows and stuff started breaking.

No, high dynamic range rendering is not dynamic.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's my Nvidia 5700LE video card that reads as "red" in the performance/test section.

I thought this was funny.

I died and realoaded, this happened to all hte corpses, but the non-dead enemies were still fighting (off screen)

Didn't lag pretty much at all (just at some random times for a short while), and managed even to look quite spanky for my GF6600
