Ok, many of you don't know I work at Denny's seating people and cleaing up the front of the resturant ($7.00 an hour for an easy job). Well I had a very interesting (and quite disturbing day yesterday).
I was on my break and ordered some food, a double cheeseburger and season fries. Well I was getting my meal from the food window and noticed that my season fries only consited of about a few cold fries next to the burger. I politely asked the cook (huge dirty woman with a thick black mustache) for some more. She hardly acknowledged me and mumbled something. After I asked her again politely she said "The fries are in the window!" And mumbled some incohereant ebonic referecnes towards me.
Wow. Ok, no big deal. But check this out.
So I seat a regular who comes in to the restaurant. His waitress isn't around because she's usually outside smoking her flirting with her boyfriend whose also waits tables. So he told ME to get him an ice cream sundae. Since I know him I make it extra special and give it to him. He's very intelligent (graduated from Harvard, and was a history professor for 15 years) and thought I did a good job. I made him a ticket since his server wasn't around and didn't even check up on him, and I cashed him out. Well he gave ME a dollar for a tip saying I went "above and beyond the call of duty as a host. So I take the dollar thinking I could get some desert later or something.
Well after that my manager ushers me into her office. She tells me waitress is making a big commotion about me "stealing" her table, and taking her tip. So I give up the tip to the manager and leave the office.
Question. Even though it was just a dollar, the principle of me having money taking away from me for a job I did, to another person just because I had to take over their station because I their incredbile addiction to nicotine, or their addiction to their boyfreind is absurd. Seriosuly, get paid for your own work. Even though the manager agrred she said there were "politcal" ramfications.
The point is, it doesn't matter if it's a dollar or a hundred dollar, it's still something I worked for to cover someone else's butt, and it was given to ME. Even the man said "this is for you", he didn't say her, or the server of the station but "you".
What do you think?

P.S. Just had to throw the Fry Nazi story in, sort of shoes the demeaner of the employees.

The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world.
