Any good horror or scary movies these days?
2005-10-30, 2:22 PM #1
For Halloween , a couple of friends and I were thinking about watching movies that were with spirit of this holiday. So, I went to the local video rental store, Blockbuster, but couldn't really find anything interesting. Ring 2 was there, but I avoided it because I heard it was pretty disappointing. I already saw The Grudge but my friends might have not already. It was an alright movie, better than the other recent titles. I'm not too sure about The Boogeyman and (the remake of?) The Amityville Horror. Also, I haven't seen Saw yet, so I might ask if my buddies if they want to see it. There's alot of horror "classics" on the shelves, so I might pick out one from there.

Well any suggestions or discussions on good new/classic horror movies? It doen't have to be terribly scary, just good or fun. What have you seen?

Ghostbusters. It's hardly scary, but it's just not Halloween without it.

One Missed Call - Really creepy scenes, especially in the compulsory abandoned hospital towards the end, and a masterful scene in an exploitatively sensationalist TV-show, making the audience feel unsafe, even in the middle of a myriad of people.

Oodishon - Not really a horror-film, until the last scenes. Not going to spoil it, but it does involve the most horrific use of a serrated-edged piano-wire and needles combined with the body *shudders* Kiri Kiri Kiri Kiri!
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

Seven, or Se7en, or whatever is pretty good.

Ring 2 sucked
The Amityville Horror sucked (The old one and the remake)
The Grudge was god awful

Watch Saw, and then go to the theater and watch Saw II.

Also, not so much scary, but creepy as freaking hell. The Mothman Prophecies.
Think while it's still legal.

Heyy, everybody knows mothmen are african american super heroes from the future.... harrr! J/k, Mothman prophecies was alright, I'd recommend the original japanese movie the ring, but you've probably have already seen that. This probably isn't what your looking for at all, but I just started system shock 2 and intend to play that a bit, its supposed to be pretty scary.

Also seconded. Not scary at all, but still a great movie.

I just saw The Fly II which was kinda disturbing [and gory]. I hear the 1986 version of The Fly is much better though. You know, the one with Jeff Goldblum. :p

I'd also recommend Alien and Aliens. The best Sci-Fi Horror I've ever seen. Just good movies in general as well. Watch the first one if you're more into suspense. Watch the second if you want some more action.

I also recently saw The Hitcher on TV, which was quite good. Rutger Hauer is an awesome villain.

Not entirely 'scary', but Shaun of the Dead is a great recent horror / romantic comedy.

28 Days Later was pretty good too.

Amityville Horror wasn't bad, despite what I heard about it. I actually really liked it.

Shaun of the Dead - Already said, not very scary, but still one of the best zombie movies ("Don't say that!" "What?" "Don't say it!" "Don;t say what?" "That!.. the zed word!" :p) ever. and absolutely hilarious.

Dog Soldiers - Its a Sci-Fi Original so, i know, that's a red flag, but this really is a gem. its Scottish Soldiers vs Werewolves, and frankly i think it would have been hard to mess that up. Its really funny, and quite scary at parts. The werewolves costumes could have been done a bit better, but that's really a minor concern.

Event Horizon - A bit older, from 1997, but its a relaly freaky Horror Sci-fi about a ship that apparently uses a new dimentional jump drive to go to hell. Sounds cheesy, but it is a relaly good psych thriller. And it has Sam Niell, who's great.

Army Of Darkness - More funny then scary, but it's Bruce Campbell. 'Nuff said

Bubba Ho'Tep - Again, a bit more funny then scary, but it does have a soul-sucking egyptian ghost as an antagonist. And its Bruce Campbell.

Oh, and Saw, as well. Acting wasn't the best, but it was a really intersting and freaky movie all the same.

There's a new Australian Horror film out (or maybe just about to be released) called Wolf Creek and I've heard on the radio and read in the paper that it's so scary that people are walking out in the middle of the movie because they just can't take it, and there have also been reports of people vomiting in the theatre from what they see on screen. Sounds pretty good it you ask me, I can't wait to see it.

I would have suggested this as well, although it's not really horror, like Daeron said. But it's gross. But fortunately it's not stupid, like for example Hannibal.

Well, if people suddenly started to throw up all around me in a movie theater, I'd say it would be quite horrific...

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (The old one) The most disturbing movie you'll ever see.

Or you could just be like everyone esle and watch Halloween on Halloween, but I'm guessing AMC has already killed it.

Dog Soldiers is WAY to cheesy to be scary, but its good for a laugh IMO. :)

AoD, is absolutely HILARIOUS! Man... When that cardboard skeleton is 'riding' that horse, I almost fell out of my seat laughing. Or at the end when he has unlimited ammo for his shotty and pumps away missing everytime... OMG! *dies*

Cant go wrong with the classics: Hellraiser, Friday the 13th (the original), the Romero zombie movies, anything associated with John Carpenter (except those Vampire movies, ugh), Halloween, etc.
2005-10-31, 10:54 PM #37
I just got done watching Romero's Night of the Living Dead. For a 3.x GB download, it was definitely worth it.

the only part I didn't like was when the rescue party shot the black guy at the end. It was an unexpected plot twist, and was kind of anti-climatic--- the guy lived through hell only to be killed by a fellow human by accident.
2005-11-01, 12:27 AM #38
Pssst. That's kind of the point of the whole movie. Metaphor, y'know?

Hmm. How many horror movies are there where the black guy gets screwed over? Is it really a trend these movies are known for?

I also liked The Mothman Prophecies. It doesnt rely on special effects to tell the story, but uses good old fashioned camera tricks and excellent sound editing to make a creepy movie.
