Just wondering what some good modeling programs would be?

Id like to try and make a few game character models and such.

*Just try and lay off the links to classes to be a model*

If you don't need anything published, I strongly recommend Maya PLE. It's free, though it saves in its own format and leaves watermarks all over your renderings. However, it is a fully functional version of Maya which is pretty much the industry standard, other than 3DS Max.

If you're looking for something free, check out Blender and Wings3D. Both very good modeling programs. Blender is becoming more and more professional with each new release.

I recommend starting off with wings. It has a simple interface but a lot of power, and you can always export the models to blender to render (lol RHYMED) or even to maya.. and your good habits learned in wings3d will carry over if/when you use other programs.

Most games have support for major modeling programs. JK's 3do fomat is pretty hard to get to from most programs outside of milkshape 3D, but there are alternative ways to convert blender fles and others.

I highly recomend blender, its a great program, but it has a bit of a learning curve.

A bit?

You open up the program for the first time, and you're assulted with nineteen million buttons, sliders, switches, widgets, menus, and clickermahooks.

And each of those opens a menu which consists of fourty gajillion other whachyamacallits and whoppermalooks.

I kind of like it that way. It beats having to hunt through various menus for a tool (unless the menus are particularly well layed-out, then it's not so much of a hunt). Plus, Blender's gotten a lot better about reducing the amount of clutter on the screen at any given time.

haha, I use Maya!

not that I'm really good with it... I'm better at the animation and rendering parts rather then the actual modeling part... but I can make a decent model if I wanted too.

I've enjoyed using Maya, though it's a hefty price tag.
