Ipod Nano or Ipod 5th Gen.?
2005-11-03, 9:21 AM #1
So, I can't decide whether to get the nano or the new 5th gen. ipod. Both have their strong points.

I have about 9 gigs of music, but 90% of it's stuff I rarely listen to. The obvious choice then would be the nano, but the ipod with its movie playing capability, and the fact that with 30 gigs I can put my whole library on it (which means I'll have the option to look up songs I haven't heard in a while if I'm in the mood) makes the decision to buy the nano or regular ipod much more difficult.

Any opinions?

I've barely filled up my iPod Mini, personally, but since you have such a large amount of music I'd probably go for the video iPod, since it holds more and you get the added advantage of...well, videos. That said, I haven't actually seen or used the new iPod, so I can't testify to the quality.

The Nano is very funky, but apparently they have a lot of issues.

Unless you absolutely need the small size of the Nano, it seems like a no-brainer to get the 30 GB 5th gen.

Yeah, go with the 5th Gen. IT sounds like the best choice out of the two for you.

ROFL @ iPod ripoffs.

Go the real route, get an iRiver.
2005-11-03, 12:26 PM #10
iRivers are nice, as are iPods. My ONLY real beef with the iPod is the sound quality.

That said, the Nano has one major advantage on the video--it can flip through tracks effortlessly and without draining the battery too much.

the iaudio is more expensive for the same amount of storage. the only advantage i see the x5 having over the ipod is a built-in microphone and an fm tuner. the soudn quality is supposed to be very similar to the ipod's, navigation seems clunky, and what i especially dont like about it is the headphone jack, which is placed on the SIDE of the player. how am i supposed to put the x5 in my pocket, with the unnatural jutting of my headphone cord?

It wouldn't be that bad, the iAudio supports more formats, has much better sound quality, and I think has an adjustable EQ. I call that MUCH better.

And the interface isn't clunky at all...honestly, the iPod has a nice interface, but that doesn't mean every other interface on the planet sucks.

It's usually best to wait for the bugs to be worked out before getting any kind of new model. If yu want a nano, wait for a few month.

Ask yourself: Are you /really/ going to watch movies on your iPod?

The screen would be /so/ small.. I really don't see the point.

The outputs on iAudio and iRiver players are widely considered to be far superior to Apple's. The also ship with better ear buds, the iPod buds blow. I think iRivers come with buds from Sennheiser, iAudio from Cresyn (the same company that supplies drivers for Audio-Technica's high end earbuds).

Of course, they all pale in comparison to anything from Etymotic, Shure, Westone or Ultimate Ears.

PSP is for watching videos. iPod is for listening to music.

Seriously. The PSP is awesome for videos, with its massive screen and all.

Yeah, and the 1gb memory sticks that cost $100 and all.

I'd say go with a 5G. And then put Linux on it and play Doom during school/college/work/etc.

What good is video if you can't see anything? Frankly, if you are gonna spend the money, spend it on something that'll work.

(Correct me if I'm wrong, but...) I doubt the PSP can decompress the latest XviD encoding in real time, making anything less than 1.5gb of storage virtually worthless.

There really isn't much info on how good they are, actually. The UM2 is a great little IEM, I had a pair. They have like, no treble though, which sucks. But a lot of nice bass. The Ultimate Ears UE-10 Pro is widely considered to be the best IEM for any application, often exceeding quality of many full sized headphones.

It's flash based, has a color screen, and uses Apple's own clickwheel instead of an outsourced one.

The flash base allows for switching of songs without draining the battery by taking it from a microdrive into a flash cache, and the color screen is much easier to use, along with the new Apple scrollwheel reducing the cost of manufacturing.
