I Might Like A New Computer
2005-11-03, 4:46 PM #1
I'm considering a new computer. I've still got a clunker from back in '99, Windows98, 700 megahertz. I kind of want to get a new computer, in other ways I don't. I don't want to lose support for a lot of my older games and files. I also don't want ot have to transfer ALL of my stuff over. But I guess I'd need to sooner or later. I'll get a laptop for college, but that's not for another 1 and a 1/2 years yet, so I might want a new computer for the meantime.

I'd like a fairly cheap computer. Not crappy cheap, but reasonable. I don't want to build my own. My family has always bought Dells, but I'm open to other options. Here's the range of what I'm looking for, give or take here and there:

1.5 Ghz and up CPU
at least 512 RAM
A monitor that is capable of 1600x1200
A decent graphics card, but not some insane one
Probably WinXP (I'm not sure if it should be Home of Office Edition, would someone care to elaborate?)
USB and a FireWire port
AT LEAST 50 GBs of storage, preferably in the neighborhood of 60+
More that I can't think of at the moment?

I'd like suggestions, but please no lobbying. If you are speaking from experience or recommendations from your friends, please speak up. But don't start flaming Windows, Dell, etc.

I'd like to use this computer for editing JK, playing some games, surfing the internet and typing blahblah, and also some small-time video editing, hence the FireWire.

Also, any good sites for computer hunting would be nice! Thanks. :)

Seriously, you can't get anything less than 2.4-2.6 today, and you'll pay out the *** for it. Prefabs are ESPECIALLY bad deals nowadays. You know what I'm going to say, and if you don't like it, well too bad.

Well, if you go the prefab rout, you'll either get a really crappy PC or a decent gaming PC that costs twice what it's worth.

You want XP Pro, not XP Home. XP Home with all of the updates and such is just getting it closer to Pro.

I always build my own computers. DIY = less $$

I bet you don't even know the different between the two... Home is fine.

Build your own and put Linux on it, or else you're a wussy.

No, it really isn't. There's a lot of stuff I consider crucial missing from it.

Yeah, there's a few times I've wanted to do something in Home that I found out could only be done in Pro.

Such as log onto the Administrator account without Safe Booting.
