Gaming Mice
2005-11-04, 11:59 AM #1
So I was in Futureshop and I was looking at the mice, and I was wondering. Is there a noticable difference from a regular mouse and a gaming mouse while playing games?
2005-11-04, 12:01 PM #2
Depends on what you call a "gaming" mouse.

Generally they have higher accuracy, which some folks swear by.

Frankly, as long as its a laser mouse, I can't tell the difference anyway.
2005-11-04, 12:03 PM #3
I do CG art with a regular mouse, and I highly doubt that theres anything that requires more accuracy than CG art. Even aiming a gun in a fast action paced game wont compare.

So frankly, I feel "gaming" mice are just yet another thing for computer components manufacturers to cash off of. And I'll bet they are more expensive to!

Get a two buttom laser mouse with a mousewheel and it's all you ever need.

They had Logitech Performance Optical Mouse ( MX510) for 19 bucks

All I have is a standard HP optical mouse.

Think it might be worth getting a new one for that price?

Try to get one with a couple of thumb buttons. They rock.

I have a Logitech Wireless Optical wheel mouse.. Don't know which one. It's got a thumb button as well, and it freakin rocks. Only bad thing is I bought it about 2 years ago when they were expensive still... it was almost $60. :|
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

You know, I thought it BS until I bought my MX1000, and then my 518. I suggest getting the 518. It's ace.

Ditto. I've got a Logitech mouse with thumbs and a center button
[http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000A1GOF.16._SCLZZZZZZZ_SS260_.jpg].

Center acts as a task-switcher by default, but I've set mine up as double-click.

The Intellimouse used to be the number one gaming mouse. Then Logitech came into the game.

Once you have gotten used to a thumb button in gaming, you just can't cope anymore without it. That's a fact.

This has yet to fail me in being the best mouse I've ever used, gaming or otherwise.

Though I really want to get one of these:

More than two buttons on mice is really nice. They should have an enter key on them standard.

You don't need laser, nor even want it. To be honest, my MX518 was quite the upgrade from my MX1000 both in sensitivity and usability. The only thing the 1000 had over it was I think 1 or 2 buttons and wireless. The size, the weight, and everything else about it just lacked in comparison. Wouldn't work at ALL with my Icemat at semi-decent speeds.

Maybe its because you have a lame mousepad.

My original Riven cloth mousepad, complete with worn colors from overuse, pwns all.

Here's a pic of it:

my mx1000 works perfectly, love the extra buttons, makes navigating through windows and the web so much quicker, don't have to move the mouse around as much, the only thing I'd like to change about it is its weight.

I've only begun to notice the extra weight it carries after damaging my right wrist while windsurfing during the summer, I was supposed to go to physio but never went because I had to get back to university...stupid NHS won't transfer me to my hospital in London....gggrrr.

either way I've started doing exercise's by myself (every now and then) but even after a month, using the mouse for over 2-3hrs leaves my wrist aching. I'll admit though, before the injury, I never noticed the extra weight or thought it a possible problem.

[edit]no crude joke's about wrist injuries ;), believe me, I've heard them all...[/edit]

I'm thinking about swapping for the logitech G7 mouse, basically similar to the mx1000 but lighter and without as many buttons...not sure yet, I've been accustomed to 2 thumb buttons for nearly 4 years.

If by lame you mean a 40 dollar glass mousepad that's one of the best performance pads on the market, then sure.

Because I have money to spend. I'm not some 15 year old punk who thinks he's all that.

You blew $40 on a mousepad??

Oh dear.

I've only ever heard bad thing about those glass mousepads, or the other "performance" pads that are overly reflective.

Mine isn't reflective at all--frosted glass.

I 'blew' forty on a mousepad, yeah, but trust me there's a lot worse I could have done. For almost no friction, a large surface to use, and a pad that's compatible with everything but laser mice, yeah.

CM--that's a flaw in the laser mouse's design, not the pad. Hell, Icemat's been around long before the laser mouse.

West Wind--same mouse I have. I love it.

I don't think anyone really understands the difference a mousepad makes that would make getting one for 40 bucks (not really that much when you think about it) worth it except true gamers.

For $40, I'd want the mousepad to not only work with all mice, but to make me breakfast in bed also.
2005-11-04, 10:21 PM #39
JG, I've had that exact mouse for years, and it still works for me.

I want one of those trackballs, though.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

I got the the 510, for 20 bucks. With tax. The extra buttons are really nice for the web. Havent gamed with it too much since I just reformated my comp.
