Oh god, I think I've gone and wet myself. That movie was freaking sex.
Think while it's still legal.

I don't care about your crappy bodily functions. A review or something would be worthwhile for this thread...

I'm waiting until some whiney liberal states something along the lines of "those soldiers were so blood thursty' before I submit a serious reply.

I wanted to see that but I saw Shopgirl and Good Night and Good Luck today. So many good movies, so little time. I also need to see A History of Violence.

I really want to see it. Sometime in the next week, I hope.

It must be realized, the movie is far from accurate, even from the inaccurate book.

What, pray tell, is inaccurate?

I didn't really like it. It had no overall plot, and the point of the movie seemed to be "The Marines suck," a point which it got across in the first 10 minutes.

The only good thing was seeing Jake Gyllenhaal running around with nothing but a santa hat on his winky.

The book was written by a Marine who was there. Opinionated, sure. Inaccurate, I doubt it.

No, Santa Hats are totally illegal in the military.

Even if they're off duty? That sucks.

i want to see it.

in the army though its not as hardcore as you think theres alot of goofing off that includes streaking the other platoons bays, wearing body armor while naked and doing the happy gilmore prance with your m16 rifle. it sounds gay... but it was hilarious at the time

Interesting movie. I was somewhat glad that they didn't show something Rambo-esque like Behind Enemy Lines. It was realistically grounded. The main character never even shot anyone. The oil well rain stunned me; I never thought about such destruction in the Gulf War.

All about the air power.

Saying "the Marines suck" is a lot different from saying "the Marine Corps sucks" which I think is what you meant. And why are you complaining about the plot? It's supposed to be a guy telling his real-life story.

-----------

So anyway, I just watched the movie and I was really impressed. The boot camp sequence isn't near as good as the one from Full Metal Jacket, but it's pretty realistic just the same. The movie may not have had much of a plot, but it was trying to make a point about the war changing people.

The redneck guy kept pissing me off for making the rest of the Marines look bad, but I laughed so much during this movie it didn't matter. Despite being a graphic movie at times, it was really pretty funny - the star wars reference especially.

As for realism, this movie was a lot better than most. Of course everthing is very dramatized (like the one chance the snipers have to shoot someone), but for the sake of the movie it's easy to accept. All the references to Marine Corps stuff are pretty much dead on. Things like the wife mailing the tape do happen.

One thing lacking in the movie is the almost complete lack of a chain of command. The movie didn't make any distinction between corporals and privates, and the Marines were constantly disobeying the staff sergeant. I guess if it were more real there wouldn't be enough drama... :rolleyes:

Overall, I give this movie an 8 / 10.

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm looking forward to sometime.

The cinematography looks gorgeous. The film just looks beautiful.

I just got back from it about ten minutes ago. I would catagorize this as a comedy faster than anything else. The whole movie was full of marines doing stupid crap and it was funny as hell. One person gets shot. The worst you see are some burnt bodies. If it wasn't for the funny parts it would have just been a documentary.

I can't believe some people thought it was an action movie...

I meant relative to the book. It has the same stuff, but different.

But the dude getting shot, DOESN'T HAPPEN. Live ammo? Pah.

And since the book was a meandering collection of anecdotal scenes, the movie came out the same. Plotless and powerful only in short bursts.

Were you in the military? I don't know if it's just units around here, but the relationship between senior and junior enlisted isn't like that of officers, in my experience. It is also an STA platoon, not your average line infantry unit. They are all leaders, and there are two people in a team, which breaks down the traditional Corps organization;

Fire team=One corporal, three privates

Squad=Sergeant, three fire teams

Platoon=Staff NCO, three squads

There is no distinction between corporals and privates because the chain of command is broken down into 'shooter, spotter' who are TEAMMATES. The Staff Sergeant is the leader and senior, but by no means God. There is a reason they don't call him sir, he is a staff NCO, not a commisioned officer. Of course, that doesn't mean they can treat him like whatever, but it makes things more, casual. Target Acquisition units are, as said in the movie 'some messed up dudes'.

EDIT:And upon further reflection, I'm going to forget about trying to objectively rate it and say it sucked because it didn't have that old Marine Corps spirit.
