This article pretty much summed up how I felt about going to the prom in high school (I didn't). It just all seemed so over the top. If you don't wanna read the article, this pretty much sums it up:
Quote:
It is not primarily the sex/booze/drugs that surround this event, as problematic as they might be," that inspired the prom's cancellation... "It is rather the flaunting of affluence, assuming exaggerated expenses, a pursuit of vanity for vanity's sake—in a word, financial decadence." Surprisingly, KMHS parents and students haven't kicked up much of a fuss. Maybe that's because they recognize the diatribe has useful lessons for cowed parents eager to regain the moral high ground with their debauched adolescents. And perhaps those coddled kids might like to rebel for real rather than barf in limos on the way to beach houses supplied by parents for after-prom fun.

Now, plenty of people have gone and said that they had a great time, it just seems like you could still have as much fun without so much waste on clothes, limos, etc.
"Flowers and a landscape were the only attractions here. And so, as there was no good reason for coming, nobody came."

You can have fun without prom. However, simply because it's not the cheapest way to have fun doesn't make it worthless.

However, for me, it was worthless because I don't really care for dancing.

Yeah, I went to my senior prom but didn't have a date so I had no reason to do anything even close to flaunting. Can't say I would have done all those things if I had a date.

I'm probably going to go, but only to say I went. I'd hate to miss out on a seemingly "once in a lifetime" chance. Not to mention, it'll be one of the last times I get to hang out and enjoy my people. It's going to be a night of tears and nastalgia, not alcohol and sex.

I went to prom and had an awesome time. But then again, I was with an awesome girl and we didn't do anything close to booze/sex/drugs afterwards. We had food, watched TV, and played twister.
yay for not posting much ever

I abhorred dances and finally gave them a shot my senior year... well I went to one freshman year but I was a little tyke then and had no idea what I was doing.

Senior year...Winter formal was dancing (which I didn't do)... but also gambling and games, like pool and air hockey. That was a heck of alot more fun than prom...which was...well. Dancing, food, and a magic show that no one saw.

I highly, and I do mean HIGHLY, enjoyed my senior prom, and am looking forward to my gf's senior prom this year.

Frankly the dress up stuff is a bit of a pain, but I don't care, it's worth it to see the girls in beautiful dresses :D

I had a blast a prom and I had no date, my dress was more expensive than what I've bought for other dances, but still it wasn't too bad and I'm planning on wearing it again, and I didn't do the alcohol/sex thing after. We went to my friend's house where we went in the hottub, ate fantastic food (cooked/baked by his mom) and just goofed around.

Granted, I would have to say that the majority of kids pay exorbitent amounts for thier dresses and go and get wasted afterwards, but taht doesn't mean you have to.

...massively good times though

My senior prom kinda sucked. A good number of my friends (including my date and girlfriend of the time) were gone by halfway through. I didn't even get to hang out with anyone afterwards.

Lol. That's just what my friend said when we tried to talk him into going to prom (we conned him into it anyway).
The thing is though, it doesn't have to be expensive. I've never spent over $100 on a prom and I've been to three so far (I'm not even a cheap date either; I just play it smart so it's all nice and fancy still but just leave out the extremely expensive bits like wasting money on a limo or other such frivolous things). All three have been blasts.
I actually do dance and enjoy it a lot. That's what I have a problem with at my school because they usually don't play anything but rap, techno and oldies rock. That isn't the type of music you can ballroom dance to. I think it's a little undignified to be in formals and then be grinding and break dancing. Despite the crappy music, I always manage to have fun.
The main reason I go though is because if I don't go, that's one less girl that gets to go. I think a lot of girls look forward to their senior proms and when they don't get asked it can be a real downer.

What our lycanthropic friend said.

I never went. Nor did I go to "homecoming" dances.

Pfft, we got off school during UF homecoming. The city worships the school so much our calander revolved around the Gators. Never went to homecoming stuff, never went to proms, only events remotely similar I went to were for band and ROTC

I couldn't go to mine. I'm no wrose off because of it. It's not like it was my life long dream to go.

Went to mine, and it was alright. I probably could've had more fun doing something else, but I certainly don't regret going.

I went to four proms. I had a blast at each and every one, without the whole sex/drugs/alcohol scene.

I spent my prom night playing Halo and Ghost Recon with one of my friends. Had way more fun than going to the dance.

Sounds about my junior year. Went to the prom with my wife. She skipped hers her senior year and we went to the after prom. I won a karoke contest with "Turn the Page' by Metallica.

Prom is for Highschool Jocks with a constant hard-on and Cheerleaders eager to open their legs after downing only one glass of wine.

Kill them all, I say.

I was at my prom from 30 minutes, had a 30 minutes drive to the after-grad party, started drinking, memory ends abruptly 2 hours later. (Yes, I went too had on the vodka, tequilla, beer)

Woke up the next morning in the backseat of my car, puked up, sat up, opened the door, puked out. Crawled out, removed my clothing, walked into the place in my boxers.

And then came a lot of O.o
