Sadly its not something limited to Sony. Heck some spyware-removal programs stick spyware on your drives to advertise its product (I even had one change my desktop's background into an active desktop with a link to their website.)

Another example of such an issue is (and I'm sure its been on these forums in the past) is Microsoft's anti-spyware programs. If I remember right at one point they signed a contact with Gator and changed the default settings in their software for gator spywares. It used to be "remove" by default and marked as dangerous and eventually, Microsoft simply changed it to "ignore".

And that's why you don't use no-name spyware "removers"... or M$

Adware is not Ad-Aware. Two different things.

Microsoft was contacted by Gator after it was added to their definitions. Apparently they have cleaned up their uninstallation and it no longer *quite* qualifies as malware.

The definition is still in Microsoft Anti-Spyware and a message will appear asking you if you want to remove it, but the "recommended" action is to ignore it.

But, you know, Microsoft bashing is "cool" and "hip" and "all the rage" and "what-have-you" on the internet. Durr guys, let's all 'read' Slashdot (edit: Not really read it because it is sometimes informative and might change our opinions) and download Firefox. :gbk:
