I've been meaning to post these for a while, but I figured the night before I leave for Africa would be the best time to do it. I went to Munich, Vienna, Budapest and Prague - here it goes:



The lens flare is real!



I was taking a bunch of pictures of the Munich train station (which was very cool - looked straight out of a Bond movie), and this guy happens to run by.

OPEC. I would have thanked them for their skillful manipulation of the oil market, but the Austrians took my RPG.



The Austrian countryside. Those are the Alps off in the distance.

An American WW2 poster in a German shop. Yep.



A Budapest cathedral (showing some of the Orthodox influence).



An old Hungarian building next to a Communist-era..something. Apartments, I guess. Soviet architecture is sort of charming.



The Pest side of Budapest, seen through an arch in Buda. Buda has the palace, but Pest is much larger.



The Chain Bridge over the Danube, at night.



A very cool plaza in Pest with statues of people from Hungarian history. The resemblance to our new WW2 Memorial is rather strong.



This is Lajos Kossuth. He was a 19th century Hungarian patriot who saw the US as an example for the rest of the world.

Prague's kickass train station. It inspired this.



Everywhere we went was very pedestrian-friendly.





Tank tracks blown off a Soviet tank during the ill-fated Czechoslovak Revolution of 1968.



This is Wenceslas Square, the site of two revolutions, one in '68, and another in '89. The whole area around it is buzzing with people and businesses, and to think that 15 years ago people were being shot by riot police for demanding a say in government gives you pause. Or at least it should.



Where two Czech students, one month apart, burned themselves alive in 1968. Moving.



Absolutely goddamn right. I really liked the Czech Republic.

[By the way, I feel this belongs in Discussion rather than Showcase, because I'm not really showcasing the pictures. I'm discussing the trip.]

Never been to Prague, but those pictures make me want to.
