God damn it. My roommate got a worm on his system that causes pop-ups.

Totally preventable if he had updated Windows XP since the first release of SP1. Totally preventable if he had renewed his McAfee license or downloaded the free copy of Norton A/V from Mizzou. Totally preventable if he didn't go to sites where you download "up-skirt.wmv" and "wettshirt01.wmv" (according to his Firefox download history). Totally preventable if he had been using Firefox before I forced the change two weeks ago. Totally preventable if he didn't use file-sharing software. Totally preventable if he knew what was on his computer.

GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWR

I've set up his computer so that Windows will download and install updates every day at noon. I'm downloading Norton A/V from Mizzou right now, and will set it to run a scan every Friday at 9 PM (computer will be on, he'll be out). If the situation gets worse, I'll find out what dirty, infectious sites he goes to and block their IPs on the router.

His system or yours? If his, just laugh and tell him, "I told you so, n00b!"

I would, but the network's only as strong as the weakest computer.

Good emphasis through repetition, Wolfy.

Well. I found a program called "PowerReg Scheduler" in the Startup folder. Googled it, and it came back as malware associated with pop-up ads. My roommate says he's "never heard of it."

It might be used as a cover for spyware, but I'm pretty sure that program is actually a windows program that spawns in your start-up folder after reformatting.

I can't understand that stuff. I know people who think that they have to go to Campus IT to get rid of spyware, when all they'll do is re-image the computer. "I can't be bothered to figure out how to remove spyware." The basic stuff is so simple. I can understand not being able to alter registries, but that stuff you practically have to try to get.

I'm not even gonna get into the kind of sites they'd have to be going to, to get the stuff they get.

I got hit with some spyware the other day... Took me all morning to clean it up.

Lousy spyware.
