I am looking to buy the complete series of X Files DVD Box sets, and I have been looking on Ebay for them. They are extremely cheap, suspiciously cheap. Some of them say they are "Asian special editions and have some asian writing on the case, but will play fine in ANY dvd player in any country".

Has anybody ever boughten anything that claims to work in any country? Should I stay away from them? I know nothing about the DVD region coding except that certain disks only play in certain areas so I am suspicous of the "Any country" claim. Heres an example.

This one looks more safe, but a bit more money. Should I fork out the $$ and get the full US versions?

Region Zero Dvd's do exist. They play on all regions.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

heh, well I guess this doesn't matter now, but there are DVD player programs that plays all region dvds.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

yeah, but you rarely find them on legit dvds--- they are standard on bootlegs, though.

My friend has a very large collection of Asian bootleg DVDs. The defects range everywhere from un-synced audio, to large chunks of movies missing, to no English subtitles but only during key scenes, to being clearly blank discs with nothing on them except a design. My estimate would be that about 1 in 3 work properly.

But they are worth the $1 each hey paid for them, if only for the hilarious blurbs and taglines all over the cases. They clearly weren't made by someone who speaks English well as seemingly they just went for the first quote about the movie they could find. The tagline on my friend's copy of the Colin Farrel movie Alexander is "Alexander The Not So Great". I kid you not.

Ask SF_Gold_01 about counterfeit DVDs. I'm sure he'll be able to tell you if it's counterfeit or not.

i poke my tongue out at you people who still have to get dvd players thathave region lock-out.

we australians are legally entitled to have our dvd players not have region lock-out, as our consumer rights organization determined that dvd region encoding is an unfair restriction of trade that lets companies charge us more than other countries and not let us have some things entirely.

Not true. My DVD player (annoyingly) has no unlock code.
