About Airplanes and PSPs

Alright, so this Saturday I'm boarding an airplane to go visit my old stomping grounds, and of course I was thinking about my PSP--until I realized something. Isn't flash memory affected by X-Rays? And what about the PSP itself? It's gonna have to go through some sort of scanner like that, and I've never brought it through one (only had it shipped which I don't know/don't think it was scanned x-ray wise).

I'd really prefer not to lose my GTA save data, not to mention some other saves I have on my memstick. I know it sounds silly, but still, no need to be taking chances that one of the umpteen billion scanners they use nowadays damage something there..

You can put small devices through X-rays, as they are entirelly low frequency and don't effect smaller devices. I put my PDA through, along with my PS2 and memory card, both of which still work [including the 60 gig stick I had in the PDA] A PC, however, may or may not have issues. You can ask them to look at it seperatly, and they most likelly will. They did that for my wheelchair batteries, as there are chemicals in it that would have ruined them under X-rays.

Yeah, if you are worried, just tell them to treat it like a laptop.

Despite that, my PSP went under the gun last March with no issue, both my sticks still work.

K, I'll keep that in mind. Thanks.

I would just take the memory card out and put it in that little tray where you put your watches and stuff. Can't you still do that?

Isn't 60GB quite a lot for a PDA?

Anyways, I don't see why an X-ray would mess with your PSP. Just don't put a film camera through there. :)

Just carry it in a black atache case and refuse to let anyone bring x-rays near it. If they try to take it from you, run through the checkpoint and board the plane as quickly as possible. That should do the trick.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Bring a gun too. That'll probably be a great nod of appreciation to those who cooperate.

I believe that only very high energy x-rays (and at a particular frequency) would have any effect on NV-Flash memory, and at that point I think much more would be damaged on your PSP than just your flashcard.

Dont know about US airports, but at Australian airports those little tray things still go through the x-ray machines. You just dont take them through the metal detector.

It won't harm the memory. You'll be fine.

Taking files off of the PSP is just as easy as putting them on. In other words, If you're really worried, why not make back ups of your saved games on your computer?

Oh man....

I was going to photoshop a picture of MacGyver holding a PSP with a lighted wick at the end of it to show what a PSP can do in the wrong hands. However I don't have Photoshop on this school PC. :( Maybe someone will beat me to it.....
