How to defragment a hard drive
2005-11-14, 4:45 PM #1
I've noticed a lot of people on the forums lately complaining about computer slowdowns, so I thought I'd share this very good tutorial about defragging a hard drive. (Just ignore the funny wording like "datamachine" for computer; it's a translation).

http://www.datadocktorn.nu/us_frag1.php

Depending on how fragmented your hard drive was to begin with, this could increase performance by up to 10 or 15 percent! It's definitely worth doing.

I'm not paying to replace your drive if you're stupid enough to actually do this.

There are several different species of software to defragment with.

In the obvservatory with the 220 outlet.

220 couldn't kill a rat if it even tried.

This calls for an experiment... I have a 220 outlet, now I just need to find me a rat.

I'm sure a small dog would suffice. Or a hamster.

How about a squirrel? Those damned things are EVERYWHERE. And they've gotten bold enough that I could probably catch one.

I had no idea that squirrels were so common that there's a keyboard shortcut for catching them. :p

Laughing at my spelling herts my feelings. Well laughing is fine actully, but posting about it is not.

you try holding something on the 220. even if it's the rat :p you'll get knocked back without knowing what hit you. (and since i'm a geek it's technically 240v )

Isn't it 240v in Europe but only 120v here (for a common power outlet)?

It all gets pretty complicated; with three-phase you can have 220/240 or something... the difference between 220 and 240 (and 110 and 120) has something to do with RMS, if I remember correctly.

I tried this and now my home computer won't start up.

What did I do wrong?

Did you make sure to put the platters back on in the correct order? If the top one isn't right, it won't be able to find the operating system. Just remember to use a marker to label the disks "1", "2", etc. so you know which order they go in.
