Adaptive Antialiasing on Nvidia cards
2005-11-18, 11:06 PM #1
So we had a post a few weeks back about enabling Adaptive AA on Radeo 9xxx + cards thanks to some of the later Catalyst drivers.

Now I've been trying to figure it out on my Nvidia 6800GT and all I've been finding is news that 7800GT comes with Adaptive AA. Now I'm guessing that the 7800GT is the first to officially openly give a adaptive AA button, but if my old *** Radeon 9600 XT 128 mb could do Adaptive AA, then I'm sure my 6800GT can do it also.

Anyone know of a way to enable it? (Oh and yes, I did try and google it :p)

You can't do it on nVidia cards unless it's the 7800 series.

Is it a physical limitation of the 6X00 cards that makes them unable to do adaptive AA or is it merely that nVidia hasn't figured out how to make the hardware do adaptive AA?
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

physical limitation as far as I'm aware, Ati have been able to do it for a long while, just never turned it on...as for the reason why...who knows, the only thing I can think of is that they believed (correctly so IMO) that there AA was better than Nvidia's, now with the 7800's Nvidia have done a lot better with their AA, hence I think Ati decided to release this update.

Wait until everything settles down and see what the X1800s are like.

I am NEVER buying an ATI card ever again, no matter how hard you thump them.

I'm Nvidia-sold now that I have my 6800 GT. I just love it. Its pure awesomeness, can't even imagine what the 7800 GT is like. It must be breathtaking :P

I can run just about any games on full with 1600x1200 res. Theres nothing like playing Half-Life 2 (Omg yes, I borrowed the game back from a friend and its amazing once you force yourself past the damn seadoo sequence.) The only games I can't run in full at 1600x1200 is Call of Duty 2 (I run it on full at 12wtvrx1024 without a single stutter in the busiest areas) and Everquest 2 (and the later wouldn't even run great on full with a 7600 but once the shadows are off I can run at 1600x1200 nicely in most areas cept busy city areas)

Don't even need Adaptive AA at high resolutions everything is crisp and sexy.

Now I just need to buy a good monitor. The 19" hansol off-white screen just clashes with the amazingness of my Thermal Shark box and Sai-tek PC gamer keyboard :P

But now I just really gotta turn off the computer with all those blue led lights

I've got the 6800gt myself, nicely overclocked to ultra speeds and I have to admit I love it, but...

The new ati cards and the arch. are very intriguing, although they have made a bit of a cockup in respect to this launch it wasn't because of the design of the chip, more the actual building of it using some other companies components/layout/IP.

Personally I'm not going to get a x1000 series card anyhow as I don't have PCI-E and I'm not going to upgrade till at least next summer with new mobo/processor... & probably a whole new pc in the end, by which time both Nvidia and ATI *should* have new cards out.

I've read in various places that ATI are still on track with their next generation card, the R580 which was un-effected by the hold ups with the x1000 series, so basically expect another release from ATI around Jan/Feb next year. Some AIB's (board partners, ie Asus, Sapphire etc) have already received test samples of the new card and are reporting its very good...

So what I'm I basically saying...be open minded, yes the x1000 series is late to the market, but, it has a lot of potential and who here is actaully 1) bothered about SLI/Crossfire and 2) has enough money to be able to afford it?

Might look into it when I decide to change video cards, but I wont be changing until maybe next summer or next christmas.

In the meanwhile, I need suggestions on a new not-to-expensive LCD monitor (19" minimum)

all i've read is rumours and such...I don't *believe* AGP will have a fast enough upload speed for the top of the range x1800xt but for the other ones, yeah, don't see why not. Download speeds shouldn't be an issue though.

I'm going to go for a little search, be interesting to see when people expect the x1000's on AGP...

I either got the 9600 pro or XT and I see no difference. Latest drivers too.

Again it depends what you do. The upcoming X1000 is a whole different range of card than the 9600 Pro. And it depends what you do and how much of a graphic whore you are.

I like playing with the best quality I can manage, so I went for the newer, high-end cards. I had a 9600 before and it just wasn't cutting it for me anymore, and will not be cutting it for you much longer with upcoming games such as Gothic 3, Oblivion, UT2007, Timeshift, etc. You'll be eating your socks trying to get a decent frame rate there. Well... maybe with everything on low at 1024x768...

My bad--I should ask people what their sources are before I spread stuff like that.

Sorry guys, guess you are gonna have to get PCI-E :p
