Also do you have to play the first one to get it?

It would be better if you got the PC version, pertaining to mods and such. As for hours I dunno but I went through it pretty quickly, sure you might be nosey and take a look around but I sure didn't. As for fun, it certainly is first time 'round, but apart from the gravity gun there isn't much sticking for it (This is why PC version is good a la mods). Storyline is cryptic, you have to explore a lot to comprehend things (most of which are related to the previous HL).

about 15 - 20 hours of gameplay for the average gamer.

(was tired and not thinking when posted. :D)

Uhhh...if by 35 - 40 hours you mean 8 - 11.
Think while it's still legal.
Uhhh...if by 35 - 40 hours you mean 8 - 11.
and if by the "average gamer" you mean an 11 year old.

HL2 was not a long game by any stretch. I consider Neverwinter Nights with all of the expansion packs to be a long game, Final Fantasy 7-10 to be a mid-sized game, Wind Waker to be a short game, and HL2 to be a demo. :p

Edit: Perhaps he meant that HL2 would give about 40 hours of total amusement. Which may or may not be true, depending on how long it takes you to read the manual.

Most FPS games are about 8-11 hours. I usually takes me about 2-3 days on average to complete a FPS game on the first run. Its RPGs like KotoR where 30-40 hours is the norm.

Since you're after the Xbox version you should head down to your local Blockbuster (or equivalent) and rent it out to see if it's worth your money.

I'd definatly go with the PC version. I tried it out for the heck of this weekend (bought it for my bro) on my xbox and yea... framerate is really crappy at times, and at others it downright just dies. Makes me cry.

Instead just get the pc version and if you got an older PC, just tone down the graphical opshoons.

I almost walked away with HL2 last night. But then I saw CoD:2 and then Rome: Total War. Now I don't know which to get. I'm also told I should get HL2 via Steam. That would require a credit card which I lack thereof. I'll wait until Black Friday to piss away my birthday winnings.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

I feel compelled to recount my story of how I had HL2 running on an 850 Mhz PIII with a GeForce 2 graphics card. :p

The Source engine is great for being compatible with older systems. You may have to run it at 640*480 with all options off, but...

I absolutely adore Rome! The LAN battles my housemates and I have are epic. It has great longevity too, as you unlock the various civilizations. I'm currently following in the footsteps of Alexander, and conquering the East with the Greeks :D .

So yeah, there's my $0.02

Thing is, you need to decide what you like.

Rome is a long lasting strategy game.

Half-Life 2 is a short-lived amazing action flick with tons of eyecandy.

Call of Duty 2 is also a short-lived trully outstanding action flick with tons of eyecandy but it requires one power pc to get a full kick from it.

For XBox, go for HL2 (PC does own though, WASD 4 LIFE). Not my favorite game (that's Deus Ex) but definitely one of the best ever in graphics, atmosphere, action, adventure, and story. Definitely one to play.

I can't talk for Call of Duty 2, although it looks good. Still, one might say it's just another WW2 game, joining a group of 10 billion other titles. However, HL2 is teh win.

Call of Duty 2 > Rome > Half Life 2, although all three are great titles. You'll be happy with any of them.

path of neo is defintly a rental, if your a big fan of the game, pick it but wait for a few weeks for the price to drop before you do....

I kinda liked the game, it was fun... only got to between movie 1 and 2, but playing as neo when he's accepted he's the one is kick *** awesome, and the agents are actually a fearful enemy this time aroind.

but still... rent it, if you enjoy it, pick it up.
