So my friend has to do a report on the LotR subculture and she needs to interview people. I figured there must be at least a few LotR fans over here, or at least people that know them. I have no idea what's she planning to ask, but if you're interested...um, just say so! She'd be oh, so very happy. :D

Have her interview Christopher Lee. That man has said he reads LOTR once a year, every year. Has done that for decades.

Might be kind of hard to arrange the interview, though.

It stopped being a subculture when the movies came out.
Actually I don't think there's been a "Frodo lives!" subculture since the 60's.

Thanks guys! I'll tell her when I see her later today!

I have really no clue what the report is about, subculture wise. Really all I know is she wanted to be in the Harry Potter one.

hahaha poor her.

I had to write a report on violence on tv once in high school. And I was all for violence, and I had to write against it. I was like... geez...

I had to write on gay marriage once. The assignment said to make a detailed report of my stance on a controversial issue, so I did. Got a D because I 'couldn't completely disprove the Bible and thus had drawn the wrong conclusion'.

I hate my previous school with a passion.

Yea don't worry, I was asked in essais and reports to state my opinions by teachers and was graded down from them. Matter of fact, one of them got me suspended for a week, lol. That did not sit well with my parents.

Disprove the Bible? That's the most ignorant and stupid thing I've ever heard. If someone said that to me it would end in blood - I don't care if it's a teacher, a cop, a politician, a soccer mom or what-have-you. I'd teach them a lesson about logic starting with Occam's Razor across the throat.

Fortunately most people who believe in the Bible also understand that the "Bible" argument is making the positive claim over the "Not Bible" argument, so it's sorta their onus to provide proof (rather than vice versa... it's never someone's responsibility to disprove a claim only to prove it. That teacher's reasoning would earn him/her failing marks at any respectable institution). It's also fortunate that most of the people who have actually read the Bible don't believe any of the crap these mongoloids are spewing out amongst beer, crumbs and genetically impure offspring.

It had also have better been a christian private school, because if it happened at a public school you should have threatened litigation.

Heh, in our school we got rid of the school bell and had to write an imaginary letter to our principal and argumenting for or against the bell.
One guy was all for a bell (he wanted to have it back), but wrote against it, because he couldn't find any arguments for the bell.
Sorry for the lousy German

I suppose there is a separate Tolkien 'subculture' of people interested in geneaology or cartography, and applying that interest to Tolkien mythology.

I could probably tell you some about the geneaology, I did once compile a complete tree for the House of Finwë and the House of Elendil, to see exactly what relation Aragorn and Arwen are to eachother (first and third cousins, 63 and 60 times removed).

Though I know of the transisions of the shape of Arda across the Ages, I don't think I could tell you anything especially amazing about the cartography. Flirbnic might, though.

Okay, so I talked to her and basically she just wants to know what your views are of the books/movies, and how much you like it compared to other books/movies. Also, what do you think about people who don't like LotR, and then what do you think of the obsessed LotR fanatics?

Books were far superior to movies. Although the movies were good, there was a lot more in the books. Also a lot of key stuff was left out of the movies. Instance, the journey into the Barrow Downs where the Hobbits found four daggars who were made by the Numenoreans. It was actually these daggars that Merry used to stab the Witch King. This was important and left out.

I didn't like Saruman's demise in RotK:EE. I think they could have squeezed in Ch. 11: The Scouring of the Shire and removed a lot of "fluff." I would have loved to see hobbits kick "Sharky's" ***.

The rest of the discrepencies are really just nitpicks. Oh. The "Mouth of Sauron" could have not looked...comical looking.

I thought the Mouth of Sauron was done perfectly. He seemed so vile and evil, but also very mordant and mocking. I liked his personality... if I wanted a pure kick-*** villian, there's the Witch King.

Haha, I was reading Silmarillion when I realized Arwen and Aaragorn were cousins. It just felt wrong for a second but then realized it wasn't so bad considering if Arwen had short lifespan like humans and had descendants, the cousins would be really far apart.
