Unmountable Boot Volume
2004-06-02, 10:08 AM #1
The windows xp on one of my computers quit working, and I'm getting Unmountable boot volume BSOD errors when I try to run Windows XP setup.

What does this mean and how do I get rid of it?

Note: I looked at the partitions, and there's a logical DOS partition that can't be deleted. There is also the primary dos partition that windows is supposed to install on. Something tells me that this logical partition is the source of the problem, and if I can delete it, the problem will go away.
The problem is, Fdisk won't let me delete it.

How do I get out of this mess?

this would be better off in the tech forum..

anyways I'm no tech elite,

But I seem to remeber that XP doesn't use DOS, so the problem might be that your trying to install it over dos,

In any case, I would wait for some who knows what they're talking about..

OK, I figured out how to kill that annoying partition.

I remembered that redhat setup gave you the option of removing all partitions. I did so, and then quickly shut down before redhat could install. (I knew linux had to be good for something. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif] ) This killed that fdisk-proof partition and then gave me 3 linux partitions that I then easily removed in Fdisk.

I've now repartitioned it with a primary dos partion and an now formatting, which takes the better part of an hour due to my large hard drive. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

I won't know if this works until I try windows setup again. stay tuned.
