Geeky items to get for christmas.

I have found myself in the puzzling situation of having to gather a wishlist. Hardware seems to be out of the question, considering small upgrades would be silly.

What things would you suggest? I was thinking maybe some shirts I wanted. Perhaps a new mouse? What's a really good one? I've heard many good things about the MX1000 / MX518. My mouse is nice, but it's just a low end, simple logitech mouse, and is starting to act strange.

Sew, list off cool gadgets, items, and practical computer / geek related things.

Do mousepads make much of a difference? A good one, that is.

I dunno about a mousepad; as long as the mouse isn't on a shiny surface I find it more convenient to just have it flat on the desk.

Anyways, I'm asking for a new hard drive for Christmas. You can never have too much storage space (especially if you're a data pack-rat like I am).

As far as mice go...

Logitech MX518
Steelpad, or Icemat, depending ont he availability. I'd go with a steelpad first since it works with laser mice which is where the market tends to be shifting (even though I've seen no difference whatsoever between laser and optical except the fact that laser mice don't work on glass surfaces). They're 40 bucks a pop, though, so you choose.
If you do get a steelpad or icemat, www.cshyde.com get the teflon feet (6 bucks for 139). Also try to keep your mousepad clean--I use windex.

The only computer/hardware related thing on my list this year was a Leadtek GeForce 6800GT vid card.

Everything else on my list is either a game or a book.

Unfortunately I'm going to have to go forgo a couple of gifts this year because I need a couple new skateboard decks to last me (hopefully) a year or two. And I don't have any money. Maybe a new game or something will slip in. I'd love to try CoD2 or Quake 4.

The new Logitech G7 or G5 look like pretty funky mice.

They're allegedly designed for gaming.

I personally am going to avoid them--if for nothing else but the lack of buttons. Trust me, you get used to having a lot of buttons on your mouse.

I was under the impression that's what the keyboard was for. You know, having 102 keys and all. =P

104, if you're not a heathen, and the keyboard has other functionalities whereas mouse buttons aren't pre-bound, and take a lot less time to press because of convenient placement.

<.< I honestly wasn't aware until just now when I freaking counted all my keys that it was 104 now. >< I feel kinda dumb.

But honestly, while I can see uber buttoned mice being useful for some games, it seems silly for others. Like a strategy game. I could see virtually every mouse button having a useful feature. But a shooter? ... I can't see why you'd really need more than maybe 5 buttons.

meh. I'm right at home mapping things to the keyboard. And most of the time, it works pretty well since I map things as close together as possible by freqency used/usefulness. Then again I pretty much don't play on the PC anymore. I've lost most of my reasons to.

Mine technically has 124 if you count all the media keys. =P

Any more and any less than 104 is for heathens.

You'd be surprised, Ian. I have two keys out of 6 already bound to voice chat (one for vent, one for in game), and another for xfire, so that only leaves the original three.
