I'm lazy so I'll make this short

I'm looking for a (good) new videocard. it needs to be AGP, and it needs to not suck. I don't really care about what brand or model it is, as long as it works better than my aging 9700 pro. price really isn't an issue, as it looks like AGP cards are pretty cheap these days anyway.

So yeah, help plz kthx.

ATi
$193 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102608 x800gto
$240 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814121519 x800pro vivo
$299 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102492 x800xt aiw

nVidia
$179 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150106 6800
$285 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814121188R 6800gt (refurb) (they dont sell these in agp any more?)

If I were you I would go with the cheaper cards unless you plan on riding your current PC out (which I wouldnt do unless you have a 3ghz or better), in which case you should get the x800xt or the x800pro vivo (the x800pro vivo can be unlocked and overclocked to x800xtpe without any custom cooling methods, i have one of these exact asus cards and did it)

wrong. agp is more costly than pci express because pci express is already in much wider production, and newer chips have to have AGP translation chips on board (new chips are all native pci express), which add to the cost.

If price isn't an issue, go for the 6800 GT. Its the best card your gonna find in AGP.
Life is beautiful.

I just stated my personal opinion. I'd sacrifice half-baked adaptive AA (I think it takes WAYYYYY too much strength from the card to be worthwhile, 5-10 framerates drop on its own.) I tried it out with my Radeon 9600, I wanted to kill myself.

All future games will be SM3.0. NWN2 was programmed with it.

Still, I agree that thats his choice to make. Best is to read on it.

the problem is I can't find a 6800 GT for AGP on newegg, except for the refurbished one that oS posted. I don't know how good or bad refurbished hardware is... I wouldn't expect it to make a difference, but when dealing with a $285, I figure it's best to double-check :p. will I be safe with the refurbished 6800, or should I go for a different card?

[edit] ooh, adaptive AA. Forgot entirely about that. I may go with an ATi card then, just out of personal preference. what's this SM3.0 stuff? [/edit]

SM3.0 really isn't a big deal for most games. It just improves performance.

Jep--that's because you tried it on a 9600. That card is like 5 years old. Trying it on an X800 isn't anywhere near so costly--and it's not 'half-baked'.

Get a 6800GS when it comes out for AGP.

well seeing as a lot of developpers are starting to use SM3.0, I imagine perfomance will become a little more harsh on sm2.0 cards.

If that 6800 had a standard VGA instead of dual DVI, I might be /real/ tempted to buy it up for myself.

Oh, it ships with an adaptor. Is there a performance hit through a DVI adaptor like that at all?

If not, and nobody warns me otherwise, consider it purchased this weekend sometime.
Also, I can kill you with my brain.

No, there isn't any hit.

6800GS are just rebranded, overclocked 6800 vanillas.

Get a 6800GT if you're going to get anything--but I still say to consider the X800.

How does this one look?

Edit: Aside from being out of stock.. facepalm.

Alternately: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814125143R

Grr. Every time I wait to find out if a card is worth buying, it's gone by the time I check again..

Well, unless someone jumps in and says otherwise, I'm leaning towards that XFS 6800 linked earlier. Newegg seems to be fresh out of 6800GT's right now.

Or mayybbeee this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102619
If I can get over my anathema.

Also planning on getting this for the hell of it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16835888602
