Call of Duty 2, not fun?
2005-11-26, 12:19 AM #1
Well, my brother got CoD2 and I've been playing it since I'm home for the weekend and what the hell.

What happened to quicksave?
What happened to ragdolls?
What happened to performance?
What happened to this game?

This game is so goddamn hard, I'm playing it on the second to hardest difficulty and I have to reload the goddamn autosave every 20 seconds and replay the same part over and over again. Call of Duty was not this hard. United Offensive was not this hard. CoD2 should not be this hard, what were the devs thinking?

Didn't they say ragdolls were going to be in the new engine? Either way the animations still look like crap (like in CoD).

On DX9 mode the game runs terrible. Even with everything turned down and at 640x480. It should not play this bad because the demo did not play this bad.

So what happened to CoD2? Did they try to improve the game too much and instead ruined the experience (I love the new health system though)? Just asking for opinions.

I'm told it's requires a veritable beast of a machine to run. I hope game compaines realize that we don't have hundreds of dollars to spend on upgrades to run their games decently.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Get off the crack. CoD2 rocked.

It's "hard" because it's realistic on the harder difficulties. Turn it down if you're having so much trouble.

There is rag doll. Kill some guys with grenades.

As to DX9 mode, I agree with you there. It was really choppy and I had to turn it down.
Pissed Off?

I did turn it down, all the way to easy. It's still harder than CoD or UO.

Also: why isn't the ability to cook grenades in? Or the ability to throw them back? Everyone else in the damn game throws them back, why can't you?

And I hate how your squadmates just stand around while you have to go forward and kill everyone. Then they move in. What the hell?

EDIT: And that's not ragdoll. That's just an animation that flips them in the air.

I don't know what you're talking about. I'm actually finding this game rather easy (I've only actually died a couple of times so far); it runs nice and smooth at 1024*768 , and the ragdolls work just fine - though yeah, once they're dead, the ragdoll effect stops.

Ok, it appears when I was changing the difficulty to regular it wasn't applying the setting. Now that I've fixed it it plays a lot better, although there still should be a quicksave.

And no, there is no ragdoll. Apparently they took it out because it takes away from the cinematic feel of the game. While I agree, but seeing a dead guy's arm stuck in a wall is a lot less cinematic. They should have done a ragdoll/animation blend.

Even though I died perhaps too much in the demo, it still seemed very fun. Didn't even encounter major lagexpress.

CoD2 kicks major booty. The only bit I died repeatedly was the defence of Hill 400, but apart from the game was challenging but not overly difficult.

There's usually 2 ways to do things in CoD2, if you're dying a lot it's probably because you haven't found the flanking way around. The AI will generally be in front of the enemy attractting attention behind cover, which gives you the perfect opportunity to find a flaking opportunity or higher ground.

A few tips for you:

- Use cover. If you take a few hits hit the dirt real quick behind something and you'll be 'healed up' soon enough. The way the damage system works if you take too many hits in a row you die, so by using cover and all the stances to good effect you will never take too many hits in a row.
- Grenades are plentiful in CoD2. Frag like there's no tomorrow. Use your frags to stop the Nazis from establishing a position, once they are dug in it's a lot harder to get them out.
- Smoke grenades are extremely handy, and surprisingly plentiful. Use them and love them. Machine gun got you pinned down? Spot your escape route, throw some portable cover out there, and use the smoke to get to that flanking position or higher ground.
- Listen to what your commrades are saying and do what your CO tells you to do. Your squadmates call out enemy positions, so use this knowledge to your advantage. Your COs will often tell you where the flanking routes are, so do what you're told. If they tell you to get on a machine gun then do it, the game expects you to be there and the enemies that are thrown at you will reflect this.

Oh, and the game runs flawlessly at 1280x1024 with everything on max on my machine.

Realistic? I must have been a totally diffrent game from COD1.

I didn't find it hard, I beat it on veteran my first play-through.
Died a bit on Defense of Hill 400 and the very last mission is pretty effin' rough.

I think the lack of ragdolls has to do with the huge amount of bodies that amass.
I had to run it in "CoD1" mode, but still thoroughly enjoyed it.

Pretty realistic, but not totally. It's not RO definetly. But I'm sure they'll be mods for it like the first one that pump it into "uber real/hard" mode.

A) Turn down the difficulty, I mean come on, use your common sense. And they made the game slightly harder because of new AI and because a lot of gamers *****ed that the original was too easy. That OR get some skills. :P

B)What kind of system do you have? I can run the game with everything maxed out and at 12wtvrx1024 without a single stutter. Its a game that is very harsh on the system : read about games in multiple reviews before you buy a game if you're gonna whine about the tension in gives on your computer.

C)You can't downplay a game because of features it doesn't have. Yes it could be innovative to throw back grenades, or cook them, whatever that means, but you don't. Frankly I didn't miss them, I had a total blast with this game and will likely play it time and time again.

D)Oh and : "On DX9 mode the game runs terrible. Even with everything turned down and at 640x480. It should not play this bad because the demo did not play this bad." What kind of video card have you got mate? If its one that runs off the DX8 support (radeon 9600 Pro, gforce FX series are said to have problem with DX9c games.) you'll have a lot of trouble. This is a DX9.0c game.

Either way. It was really hilarious seeing you go through this thread screaming, "OMG THIS GAME IS ****!! EWWW WHY ISN'T THIS IN! BOOHOO!" heheh. I lol'd. *nods*

there is sniping in the second mission in the game :P Albeit brief and you can handle it with an ak47 just as well.

Quicksaves: Oh boo hoo, they don't have it in there. Sure I complain about it but it very rarely.

Ragdoll effect: Although it would've been a nice feature, it's not there. I'm not complaining though.

Performance: Specs of your computer would be nice. Runs just fine on my computer.

Diffculty: Turn the diffculty down if you find it so hard. Spork's tips are also very helpful. I always listened to my teammates and I beat the game just fine. Although that's not to say I did make mistakes at times(I tend to charge in the fray when I don't seem to make any progress).

Exactly what I was thinking. Unless he's thinking of the STG40 (I believe) in which case...oh hell, WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT, AK'S IN WW2!?
I had a blog. It sucked.
2005-11-26, 10:33 AM #18
StG44 also referred to as the MP44

which yes has some VERY SMALL resemblance to an AK47... but is very noticably different...

2005-11-26, 10:37 AM #19
I just looked it up Jim, and it's referring to it as the MP43

You decide. I can tell it's not an AK, because the AK stereotype is shorter and just smaller it looks like, but yeah. Whatever. Maybe he was being sarcastic.

[Edit] I'm looking at the page some more, talks about the Machine Pistol weapons the Germans used, MP 43, 44, and StG 44 look a lot alike. Sorry about that, and that picture's of an MP43 (or so says the words under the pic). I didn't know the MP's were the first assault rifles (excluding MP 40). [Edit]

HCF, the paragraph under that picture called it the MP 43. Is there really a difference, apart from year manufactured?

2005-11-26, 10:50 AM #23
read the wikipedia page... in april of 1944 the mp43 was renamed to mp44 then in july of the same year it was renamed again

anyway here's a few pictures from googling "stg44"

They had a sale yesterday at Best Buy and my girlfriend bought me Call of Duty 2 for 25 bucks! Well, too bad I can't play it till after Christmas. But that's okay, I'm still having fun in Quake4.
2005-11-26, 11:13 AM #25
CoD2 was pretty fun. Maybe you should play on an easier level if you think it is hard. You know, like a logical person might.

Any of the features that you expect CoD2 to have that it does not I have complete faith will be in patches. CoD always had great patches, and I doubt CoD2 will break the habit.

And I'll be pissed if they put nade cooking in. There were mods for that in CoD, and it was so incredibly cheap.
2005-11-26, 12:01 PM #28
First and foremost, you suck.

#1 They implemented an auto-quicksave so you don't save milliseconds before you die, and have to load from a previous point in the game that you played a long time ago.

#2 - What are you talking about, there are ragdolls, COD and COD UO didn't have ragdolls,

#3 - Performance? This game can run on a low-end computer if you have it on the right settings -- even though it'll look like crap.

#4 - What happened to this game? It's awesome.
2005-11-26, 12:11 PM #29
But still... quicksave is useful.

And the lack of being able to toss grenades back, although minor, is slightly annoying.

high probability that my mom got CoD2 at best buy... and also a very high possibility that that was her i saw at circuit city with a copy of quake4

i guess i gotta spend the next month playing quake2, it's expansions, CoD, CoD:UO and making some backups so i can clear out some HD space

Yeah, you're gonna die and smolder eternally for thinking AK's were in WW2.

Seriously though...have you EVER seen/heard of AK47's being it WW2? It's a Russian weapons for God's sake, and (I could be wrong on this) in CoD2 you're fighting Germans, not Russians before they came to the Ally side correct?

Just a note here, and not meaning to insult you seeing as how we understand that you didn't know it was an AK.

If you didn't start with the weapon, odds are it isn't an AK because you probably picked it up from a dead German, no?

Hey, be kind to the Jepman. I know in America everyone owns at least 200 guns and has to take gun history classes, but here in Canada we aren't so civilized.
