Gamecube: The must-haves?
2005-11-26, 7:24 PM #1
Well, i've had my gamecube for quite awhile now, but I have been rolling with the same 5 games that I played to death (Metroid Prime, Rogue Leader, and Eternal Darkness are the notable ones) and I havent touched it in probably close to 2 years (rough guess). I have been out of the video game loop for about that long as well, and I figure by now some good games have had time to lower in price.

I have NO idea what good games are out for my system, what have become classics, etc.

Spit me a few good GC titles that I can go out and buy for a reasonable price that are actually worth the price. Any genre, and dont say Resident Evil because i've played em all and dont like em.

Mario Kart: Double Dash

Pikmin (or Pikmin 2, probablys just as good).

Wind Waker

i havent played much GC but those 3 games are awesome

that Farm game too, that one is good.... cant recall its name though.
2005-11-26, 7:29 PM #3
Yeah, I know you said "don't say resident evil" but Resident evil 4 is nothing like the other ones. Completely different gameplay mechanics / game engine, plus it's like... really really good. It's the Halo of X-box to Gamecube IMO (excluding those morons who ported it to PS2)

THAT being said...
Viewtiful Joe (1 and 2): throwback to the old 2-d adventure platforming games, with 3-d graphics. Revolutionized, very fun.

Mario Kart: Double Dash [/b]

Just to combat all the SSBM posts... that game seemed ok, but during 6 hour DD sessions, some extremely close friends i know actually had fist fights, and during those 6 hours i was giggling like a giddy schoolgirl.

It is insanely good.

even though its not a dad joke, its an Xbox game that wasn't released on GC.

Funny thing is, RE4 for PS2 is better than RE4 for GC. Sucks to be the GC at this point.

Regardless, I would still reccommend RE4, but for PS2 if you have it. Give it a chance--it really is different.

GC? Viewtiful Joe, F-Zero, SSBM...wind waker if you're psychotic about spending too damn long on a freaking ship. Other than that, it's pretty much personal opinion and wants.

I know you have some of these, but I'm listing them for completeness:

Must get
Eternal Darkness
Metroid Prime, Prime 2
Paper Mario 2
Soul Calibur 2 <- You need to get this. It's the best fighting game ever created.
Rebel Strike <- includes all of Rogue Leader in coop, plus more missions
Super Smash Bros. Melee <- The god of all games.
Wind Waker <- Absolutely glorious and the best Zelda ever, apart from the tedium of the world map.

Get it used
Four Swords (If you can get it used) <- classic LttP-style Zelda gameplay with good coop support, although you need GBAs and link cables to play it in multiplayer.
LotR: Return of the King (If you can get it used and you don't have an Xbox) <- Really fun, arcade-style gameplay. Quite challenging on higher difficulty settings. It's sorta like a Gauntlet for LotR fans.

Iffy. Avoid, unless you share my tastes:
Gauntlet Dark Legacy <- Doesn't play so well on the Gamecube: low framerates and long loading times. It's a fun game though, but much better on the Xbox.
F-Zero GX <- *twitch*. Racing game. 2000 kph. You do the math. One of the hardest games in this past generation.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles <- it's a serious 'meh' if you aren't playing it with 4 people. Another one that requires GBAs for multiplayer. It's not really 'Final Fantasy', more like sucky gimmicky Gauntlet. It's fun if you like the FF characters and references.
Mario Party * <- Really fun party game for the first 2 hours or so.
Starfox Assault <- It's actually not too bad, but it's not so great either. The traditional Starfox flight sequences are actually the weakest parts of the game. The transition from spaceflight to on-foot has an amazing sense of scale.
Starfox Adventures <- Another mediocre title from Rare. Not bad if you're a fan of Starfox games, just don't expect Zelda.
Pikmin 2 <- Came highly recommended. I bought it but I haven't even looked at it yet.
Tales of Symphonia <- See 'Pikmin 2'.
Sonic Mega Collection <- Get this if you liked the Genesis games.

and those are the noteworthy Gamecube games from my collection

I'm suprised no one's mentioned this, so I'll just throw it out there.

Doesn't the PS2 version have everything the Gamecube version had, plus a new game mode? How does that make it worse?

Then again, I've been told Ashley's boobs don't bounce in the PS2 version, so yeah, I guess the Gamecube version is better.

Well I went out and got Resident Evil 4, Legend of Zelda: The wind waker, and Super Mario Sunshine for $54 altogether, I think I did pretty good. I have 7 days to return a game if I dont like it.

Tell me you either:

A. Bought Super Smash Bros
B. Already had it
C. Will be promptly returning to the store to buy said game

To neglect the system's best game ever, is to be shot.

Luigi's Mansion must be pretty damn cheap now as well. Pick that up if you can. Amazing game.

They don't have it cause they can't keep it in stock, a testament to the awesomeness of the game.

Find it somewhere else :p :D

As long as you got RE4, I'm happy. That's a great game.

And in terms of PS2 vs GC...

From what I hear, PS2 has slightly worse textures/lighting (minimally, only visible if you've played the GC from what I've heard).
But still, theres a + for GC

It should be noted that SSBM isn't a very good single player game, so you better have friends to play with.

Also, give RE4 a good chance. I found it boring in the beginning, but quickly grew to love it. It's definitely one of the best 'Cube games. You should also know that I too didn't like any RE games before it.

Here's the list of my games:

1080 Avalanche (I actually really enjoy this game, I think it's under-rated, and is 1 of 3 games that supports LAN)
Zelda: Wind Waker
Zelda: Four Swords
Zelda: Classics Collection (I don't think this can be purchased normally, if at all)
Zelda: Ocarina of Time/Master Quest (same as above)
Kirby's Air Ride (not really that great, but really simple, and also supports LAN)
Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (hey look, the third LAN-supported game...)
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (aka Paper Mario 2. PM1 is on N64)
Soul Calibur 2
Super Smash Bros. Melee

I'll put in my votes for 1080 and Paper Mario, as the other good ones already got uber-suggested by everyone else ;)

Honestly, Mario Kart: Double Dash is only GC game I'd consider an absolute 'must-have', and even then only if you've got 4 controllers and 3 friends.

But hell it's almost worth getting the controllers and making friends just so you can play DD.

I love my Wavebird, so I wish the Gamecube had more games like tactical shooters (eg Rainbow 6), the GTAs, Pro Evolution Soccer/Winning Eleven etc. I like Nintendo games and I know this system is not about those kind of games, but still.

I bought Soul Calibur 2, and I find it tiresome.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.
2005-11-27, 6:21 AM #30
1080 was a good game. I loved the n64 version, and this one rocked. It has two songs from Finger Eleven: Other Light and Good Times, which are two of my favorite songs on there. The single player is awesome, especially racing the avalanches.
obviously you've never been able to harness the power of cleavage...

All I have to say now is:SSMB!! Like everyone said it is a must have.

Just for the sake of the GC vs PS2 of RE4:

PS2:

+Extra Story Mode: Seperate Ways
+Movie Browser
+PRL412
+Red9 Exclusive is 6.5 instead of 5.0
+Felt it was easier to dodge things with square/X rather than A/B

-Worse graphics
-Receive more pestas than ammo(In main story and Seperate Ways)
-GC has better controls(even though I'm more comfortable using a PS2 controller)
-Movies don't show extra costumes or show the tactical vest

BTW, I've owned both versions of RE4(just gave away my GC version to my friend since he doesn't own a PS2).
No sig.
2005-11-27, 9:42 AM #33
Twin Snakes is also a game everyone needs to play. I do like the PSX version better, but if you have to play that game on the GC to play it, please, do. It's probably going to be one of the most historically referenced game in the light of new videogames.
