Ok so im watching The Battle Of Coruscaunt [sp] and i noticed..
Where the hell are the sheilds?
1. One Arc gets hit ONCE and gets the death spiral
2. Those things land on Obi's ship and dont get zapped
3. The Cap ship battle. The shots don't even hit sheilds!
4. When they shoot at grevios's [sp] ship there shots don't hit any shields

So ummm... Wtf?
2005-11-26, 10:18 PM #2
seeing as those ships have probably battleing for quite a while (watch season 2 of the clone wars series), the shields probably were worn out ages ago, that is, if they even have shields.

Yeah, that's what I figure. Also, it looks a lot cooler to have the ships blowing each other apart too.
Pissed Off?

Ok so thats the cap ships all figured out BUT
1. Ive seen that episode Obi Wan and Ani were just leaving so there sheilds must have been ready
2. Of course they had them! [if the Nabooians had them why not the republic?]
3. That doesn't explain the "1 hit miracle" of the Arc-170
2005-11-26, 10:31 PM #5
Tie FIghters don;t have shields. Maybe those fighters didn't either.

And even with shields, starfighters go down fast. Look at the X-Wings during the trench run, for example; it only takes a few shots to knock them down.

Starfighter shields can only deflect a hit or two before failing. No starfighter can stand up against concentrated fire.

Dude, use capitalization.

It was most likely a typo, seeing as the keys are RIGHT NEXT to each other. Get over it?
Moo.
2005-11-26, 10:42 PM #8
Well, it is a typo that he makes quite often. Just check the mousetrap thread.

Chill out, it's a typo. Besides, you of all people can't complain about little nit picky grammar stuff since you've got plenty to work on yourself.

Why do people ask questions like these? Its a MOVIE.

Yes, but most of us are not that nerdy, and also, have enough critical thinking skills to be able to make assumptions such as the shields have been worn out, and starfighters have very weak shields.

In Avenger's defense, it's an internet forum, not an English paper.

So you're saying he's stupid for asking the question?

I don't normally go after people like this, but you've been unnecessarily rude in this thread, and it's getting on my nerves. It doesn't make you look cool, and it doesn't make you better than anyone, so unless you're trying to make yourself look like a total ***, I suggest you stop before you piss off the wrong people.
Moo.

Actualy, critical thinking skills!= intelligence.

And, as drizzt2k2 pointed out, it is only a movie.

If you're going to feebly stumble about attempting to make technical commentaries, perhaps you should do some research. It's fun. You get to read about jedi and stuff.

In Star Wars, energy shields hug the surface of a ship or a fighter. In order to function, certain things need to extend beyond the shields: weapon emplacements, sensors, hangars and whatnot. Turbolasers also pack a HUGE punch, and it's way too much energy for the shields to dissipate entirely. We saw weapons fire punch through Star Destroyer shields in ESB.

it was really cool to see the republic ship and the separatist ship cruising past each other just blasting reminiscent of the old naval battles with cannons.
that was awesome.
2005-11-27, 10:01 AM #19
Why didn't they have shields? I'll tell you why. To go faster, and heck they really didn't need em... they redirected the power from the shields to the engines... that simple... now go get a life.
Nothing to see here, move along.

yeah, it was a refreshing change of pace from TPM's "WW2 in space" and AotC's "Vietnam in space". :p

Well, the truth is that *realistic* space battles would be pretty boring. The ships would be too far apart to be able to see more than one on the screen; you wouldn't be able to see the laser beams, there would be no sound, and destroying a ship would probably just entail breaching its hull so that the atmosphere would escape and/or shutting down its engines and weapons. So no explosions.

So 19th-century-naval-battle-style space wars make for better cinema. :p

You're talking about vehicles that can harness enough power for interstellar flight. I'm pretty sure real ships like that would explode violently. It just wouldn't involve fire.
2005-11-27, 12:10 PM #26
Yeah, I guess. Fire-less explosions anyways. But it still depends on where you hit them.

It depends. Imperial Star Destroyers have two key power sources:

1.) Battery backups and small low-power generators, which are used to keep the computers and life support systems operational in the event of a primary power failure. The largest one is the little sphere-shaped thing on the bottom of the Star Destroyer. According to the X-Wing series, taking out this generator is enough to disable or destroy a Star Destroyer.

2.) A gigantic fusion reactor that's piped directly into the 3 main engines. It occupies something like 1/3rd to 1/4 the Star Destroyer's total volume.

The exact functionality of the fusion reactor is unknown, but it's an absolute certainty that if the reactor were breached (or otherwise lost containment - power failure, perhaps), it would cause quite the violent explosion since the reactant mass is still so low. Shutdown safeguards in a fusion reactor that size and with that amount of output is well beyond our current technology (to say nothing of building one to begin with). It would almost certainly explode.

When a ship explodes in space there would be enough excess oxygen to allow for a small bit of fire, right? What happens to oxygen when it's released into the vacuum of space anyways?
2005-11-27, 7:38 PM #31
Well the fire needs fuel as well as an oxidizer; we're used to explosions having fire because we use chemical fuels that burn well. The only thing on an advanced spaceship that might burn is the metal of the ship itself, or the "emergency boosters" (as seen in Ep. 3). Most spaceship explosions would just look like really bright flashes of light, then an expanding cloud of debris. Might look similar to an upper-atmosphere nuclear detonation.

I honestly could not give a ****. Wow, look at you, acting all smart and throwing around wikipedia entries. Guess what? No one cares. Quit being an ******* and start treating people with some decency.

Back on topic...

On the subject of "fuel", one could say that the explosions are due to the tibanna gas used in blasters and turbolasers (Tibanna is the stuff that's superheated and compressed to form blaster bolts.)

And, when all else fails, remember that suspension of disbelief is your friend.
Moo.

Apparently, noone cares what you have to say about me, as noone else has made any commments. You were the one that blew this out of proportion. take a chill pill.

I'm inclined to agree with alpha1 here. Contradict his post if you so desire, but you flew off the handle and lambasted him. Not tolerated here. I'd advise you to look here
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Sorry JG, I agree with CoW.

While his rebuke was technically not necessary, alpha's being irritating enough to warrant something like that.

In all likeliness no one else commented because nobody wanted to bother with him, not because nobody thought he wasn't being as annoying as CoW seemed to have thought. (wee negatives)

In any case I don't think it was unjustified or wrong, even if it might be "unnecessary"

1. Maybe its shields were low.
2. The Republic Starfighter models that Anakin and Obiwan are flying simply don't have any shields.
3. The shields of the command ship are down, because Anakin took them down. That's why the Republic Cruiser moves into position to finish the command ship.
4. Same.
