I expect to see many Starcraft answers, but as for me, I'll say the Age of Empires series. I haven't played the third one yet, but the first two were quite awesome. Given the first was rather simplistic and had some AWFUL ai, the music, random maps, and awesome gameplay more than made up for it. With the expansion (Rise of Rome) came helpful little things like queues.

As for Age of Kings - wow. Such a great game. Castles were incredibly fun, all of those unique units, improved farms, fishing nets, formations, and awesome looking wonders - it was sweet. When Age of Conquerors came along (still, in my opinion, the best expansion ever) the circle was complete (sorry, that was corny). You could queue farms, garrison in rams, and you even had unique technologies. THe game just had so much replay value.

Age of Mythology was also a good game, but in some ways wasn't quite as good as Age of Kings. The "capture a settlement" form of gaining population sucked.

Wow, I said "awesome" way too many times during that post. :o

This should be a poll.

I was always partial to the original C&C myself.
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

Well, when I say "best", I'm trying to say "best expansion for an RTS game in terms of overall value". I've never had an expansion for that kind of game that has added so much. Most expansions just toss in a couple of units, a new race, and say "hehe, look, we can charge people for this!" Not with the Conquerors:

  1. 5 new civilizations
  2. 11 new units
  3. 7 new overall technologies
  4. 19 new unique civilization technologies
  5. 4 new campaigns
  6. 3 new gametypes
  7. The addition of Real World Maps (about 6, such as Texas, Britain, Japan, etc.)
  8. New random map types
  9. New environments (terrain and animals)
  10. Last Man Standing Victory condition
  11. The ability to queue farms
  12. Smart villagers that automatically harvest at startup
  13. Ship formations and ram garrisoning
  14. And many bug fixes, minor tweaks, additions, etc.

Pretty impressive for an expansion in my books.

Balanced, eh? That must be why everyone always plays with no-rush rules.

AoK is superior by far.

Any race can rush. Thats why it's balanced. People play no rush because 5 minute games suck.

Yes, but a group of 12 should be able to take out 2 of a races baisc unit :P

Age of Kings with the Conquerors expansion. My friends and I still play it all the time.

I really dislike the third Age of Empires and am sadly dissapointed that it doesn't compare at all to Age of Kings.

I'm a big fan of Age of Mythology, and if I wasn't such a cheapskate, I'd get the expansion. I guess since I'm a mythology geek anyway, it struck a good chord with me. I just wish there was more flexibility as far as tactics and strategy go. I can't put my hoplites into phalanx formation or anything :(
2005-11-27, 8:49 PM #32
AoK could have been godly if it didn't have a small population cap for custom scenarios. As well as the ai giving up when you're totally owning their encampment (I've always wanted to convert/kill the all the last standing ai's units so that the stats showed 100% population in my favour but never could :( )

+1 on the cutscenes. RA2 was definately the most action-intense RTS I've played.

I will always love the original C&C the most though.

Honorable mention for Rome: Total War, though it is not a true RTS.

The other kinds of nerds will most likely post Starcraft and zergrush (or whatever) their pants.

I vote for C&C games in general. Or more specifically, Red Alert & 2 and Tiberian Dawn & Sun. Can't really choose them. The 12-pack coming in February is going to be awesome too.

Of course I could also mention Rebellion.
