w00tl3s... I just bought more RAM for my computer... I now have 1024 MB [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

The first 512 is PC2700 DDR, and the latest 512 (which I just bought) is PC4000 DDR wuahhahahaaa...

I'm excited.

It's fun being able to tell people I have a gig of ram... except that the girls just give me funny looks, and the guys are like... "dude... I have a Dodge Ram!"

(I did have one question though. Since one stick is PC2700, and the other is PC4000 is that going to cause any problems? I sure hope not...)

They 'should' both work. Only thing is I'm pretty sure they'll both run at PC2700 speed.

Motherboard manufacturers dont recommend you mix and match RAM. Couldnt give you a technical reason beyond 'they might not work together' why, but there's probably a good reason for it.

Oh, and of course if you want your RAM to run dual channel, they gotta be identical. Probably not an issue for you, though.

For the record, I have 2 x 512mb Kingston DDR400 RAM [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Heh, I used to have 2 x 512 sticks of DDR RAM but it was the wrong speed for my motherboard so I only have a single DDR 512 stick now. A shame because I used to have 640 or SDRAM on my old motherboard. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

I've had a gig of ram for a while now. It's the only way to go for games these days. I don't think it will be too long before it is the standard rather than 512.

Hmmmm you might have to tinker with them a little to get them working, like manually underclocking the PC4000 so the CAS latencies match.

I think it really depends on your motherboard.

I don't belive differnt CAS latencies matter unless you're running in dual channel mode. It's the fact that they're running at different speeds 333mhz, and 500mhz.

Most motherboards allow you to set the RAM speed in MHZ or read it from the SPD (I belive if you let the SPD control the speed you'll have both sticks running at whatever speed the ram is in dimm 1, but it probably depends on the motherboard.)

Hmm, well, I've had it installed for a couple of days now with no problems.. Do you think it'd be ok to leave it as it is for now or is there a risk of damaging something?

Well it depends how it's running.

If they're both running at 333mhz then you wont have any problems (But obviously you'll loose the speed advanage that running at 500mhz would give you)... if they're both running at 500mhz then you could risk overheating and even damaging the PC2700 stick.

MOBOs will almost always default to the lower speed, which means you are running at PC2700. I'd take the slower one out, sell it, and get another stick of the faster stuff. Plus, it can cause problems with crashing and stuff, although it is rare. It shouldn't cause any sort of hardware failure though.

Ok, yeah...

I'll probably sell the slower stick and get a new one... Even so for the time being, I'm happy since my RAM is now doubled... and it's not running any slower than it was. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

As long as there's no hardware damage potential, that is... Can I just check the bios setup to confirm what speed it's running at?

There's a nifty little program you can download here] which will tell you what speed and settings your RAM is running at (amongst other things).

Ram is tricky as hell from my experience. Sometimes your computer will reconize only a part of what you have. I once upgraded my old computer's ram to 256 mb, and when I boted, it would only reconize 180 mb. (I had 96 mb before) I tried switching the chips around, and it only reconized 64 mb.

nasty, nasty ram.....

You do realize that unless you're running on a 250 MHz FSB(or higher and using different cpu:mem ratios), PC4000 is a complete waste, right?
2004-06-02, 7:40 PM #17
it was pc100.

I haven't had any issues with 768mb.

I had a Duron 750 a long, long time ago..with 1.5Gb of PC133. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]
