What kind of program could be running at my school that routes my computer to a different website that says Content Filtered when I try to go to certain websites?

Default is internet explorer but with firefox its able to do it also, so Im wondering how the filter works.

It doesn't have to be running on the computer itself, there could be something on the server's connection to the internet that filters out certain addresses and returns the "content filtered" page instead.

There are loads of ways of filtering content, see if you can access the sites through an anonymous proxy, the filter might only be operating on port 80.

Chances are high that he already connects through a proxy that forbids everything else.

Some of the weaker programs like that are unable to block IP addressess. At my tech school we'd just ping a site and then go there via IP addy.

So how could I get around this? I get filtered for typing in Anonymous proxy. I also get filtered for typing in "games" in a search engine. Any other ways?

What does ping mean?

I think the proxy thing would work because each individual word of anonymous proxy is blocked.

I'd also like to know. I've only figured out how to get into say, C:, but not the internet thing.

However, I do know to go the forums.massassi.net and not [url]www.massassi.net[/url] :P

Pinging a server just means sending some data to it and measuring how long it takes the server to respond. To do this on a Windows machine, open up the command line and type ping [internet address here]. It will return something like this:

Pinging massassi.net [64.34.166.198] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 64.34.166.198: bytes=32 time=41ms TTL=245
Reply from 64.34.166.198: bytes=32 time=39ms TTL=245
Reply from 64.34.166.198: bytes=32 time=42ms TTL=245
Reply from 64.34.166.198: bytes=32 time=40ms TTL=245

Ping statistics for 64.34.166.198:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 39ms, Maximum = 42ms, Average = 40ms

You could then possibly access said website from the IP address rather than by its domain name. Depending on your filter, that may or may not work.

If you can't access the command prompt, you can use http://www.dnsstuff.com/ to ping a site, or do a lot of other cool stuff.

Some suggestions for getting around school restrictions:

Windows key combinations. Sometimes they're disabled, more often they are not. (Windows key + R = run window, + E = my computer, + pause/break = System Properties.)

Also, play with shortcuts. Get a nice, out of the way folder and start making shortcuts to all (26 - known) drive letters. You'll find some awesome drives that way... You can also make shortcuts to a lot of windows things. type CMD (or command.exe) into the shortcut window to bring up the command line, REGEDIT should bring up the registry editor, etc.

Go wild.

mind telling me what the page is that it brings you to? I could probably tell you how to get around your school's proxy specifically if you tell me what the blocked site message is. :p

a surefire way is to go to http://www.freetranslation.com and translate the blocked page from a foreign language to english (regardless of if it was english to begin with).

At our school, all Internet is ultimately run through servers at the State Department. There, they filter by content and keywords.

Sorry to dredge this up, but I'm still trying to subvert the filter at school.

In particular, I'm trying to get to the Thief: DS mp3s at The Circle . Just trying the IP didn't work, and translating the page didn't work either. :confused:

Bah. Nevermind. I'll be going home soon, and I can get it there. The filter is more of a nuisance than anything. I'm suprised Massassi isn't blocked yet...

A. Pommy should not be discussing the sorrowind proxy, it's not for public use.

B. If your place uses packet shaping, there is /nothing/ you can do to get around it. Pray to god they don't.

--- And now the tips:

A. Make sure there is no proxy server turned on. If there is, see if you can access the net without it.

B. Use a different proxy server

C. Use a web proxy.

D. Get administrator access (usually through sketchy means)

So a year later, here I am trying to figure out how to get by the same filter. Ive tried proxy's, which when I press run are filtered, ive tried pinging a site to use the IP instead of the name and that is filtered as well. I tried translating a whole page and even THAT is filtered. The run command and the msdos prompt are locked by the admin and no shortcuts can get them. This thing is pretty foolproof.

Sounds like they know all the methods.

When I first went to college we had web nanny and people was always finding ways around it but over time the admins figured out each and every method we were using till they had us locked into the sites THEY wanted us to visit.

You can try bringing Tor on a USB dongle (google for it). Then just run tor.exe (default configuration is fine) and set IE's proxy settings to 127.0.0.1 port 9050. Surf away.

But if you're caught they might ban you from the school computers.

If you use Firefox with the Stylish extension, here's a simple script to hide the page:

Code:
@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);

@-moz-document url-prefix("http://www.ccisd.net/filtermessage.asp") {
  body {
    display: none;
  }
}

I'm gonna make a better greasemonkey script that already rips the sound out of the page. IE has a greasemonkey-like thing that can supposedly run GM scripts...

Here's the GM script. Save it in a "something.user.js" file, open in firefox, and click the install button GM gives you.

Code:
// ==UserScript==
// @name           CCISD Content Filter
// @namespace      http://greasemonkey.mzzt.net/ccisd
// @description    h8
// @include        http://www.ccisd.net/filtermessage.asp*
// ==/UserScript==

(function() {
  document.body.removeChild( document.getElementsByTagName("bgsound")[0]);
  document.body.removeChild( document.getElementsByTagName("font")[0]);
  document.body.removeChild( document.getElementsByTagName("center")[0]);
  document.body.removeChild( document.getElementsByTagName("br")[0]);

  document.body.background = "";
  document.body.style.backgroundColor = "#000000";
  document.body.style.fontFamily = "Arial";
  document.body.style.color = "#FFFFFF";
  document.body.style.textAlign = "center";

  var h1 = document.createElement("h1");
  h1.style.fontSize = "72pt";
  h1.style.fontWeight = "bold";
  h1.appendChild(document.createTextNode("WTF, this page is blocked!"));
  document.body.appendChild(h1);

  var h2 = document.createElement("h2");
  h2.style.fontSize = "24pt";
  h2.style.fontWeight = "normal";
  h2.appendChild(document.createTextNode("Stupid content filtering."));
  document.body.appendChild(h2);
})();

So a USB dongle is a physical device like a bluetooth or something?

If i understand this correctly, sounds like a surefire way to piss of my school. :)

By the way, they have the Tor website on lock too. Hahaha.
