Wilder. Depp is better looking, but didn't fit the role.
2005-12-03, 8:50 PM #5
Why is Gene Wilder italicized?
2005-12-03, 8:51 PM #6
Because you voted for him.

Depp.
2005-12-03, 8:52 PM #7
He's in the lead.

By "role," do you mean Wonka as in the book or Wonka as in the original movie? Because Depp fits the book, and that's what Burton based the film on.

Oh, ok. Good.

Yeah, that's why I didn't vote. If you were basing both Wonka's off the book, hands-down Depp. Wilder's Wonka is a completely different character.

Well ... it depends.

If you are talking about them as actors they both have their fine moments. As characters of the chocolate factory, they both had their little ideal touches although neither of them actually conformed to the character described in the book (Can you say "GOATEE"?). Wilder had the singing and Depp, the looniness.

So no vote for me.

Wilder! HEZ A WILD SAVAGGE OF A MAN
2005-12-03, 9:11 PM #13
Depp.

I loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
2005-12-03, 9:12 PM #14
It isn't about which is closer to the book, it's about which one you like better. Which performance did you join most.
2005-12-03, 9:15 PM #15
Is that even a goddamn question!? Wilder kicks Depp in the face and breaks those perfect teeth.

Indeed.

TAKE THAT JOHNNY DEPP'S PERFECT TEETH.
2005-12-03, 9:30 PM #17
Well, I never took the time to read the book, so I always thought the way Wilder portrayed Wonka was how he was in the book. Oh well.

Yep, that's a very good point.

They should make a movie where Johnny Depp plays every character.
2005-12-03, 10:24 PM #20
Gene Wilder for sure. If you prefer Depp, God hates you.
2005-12-03, 10:26 PM #21
I love Johnny as an actor, he's great. Prob one of the best out there today. Honestly ever character he plays, u forget that he's portraying a role and he becomes the role. Regardless, I still have yet to see the new Willy Wonka, because I thought Gene Wilder was so brillant in the original and I didnt want to lose that. Remaking a classic, rarely comes out well. And although it had a great director and a great lead actor, I dont want to ruin a good thing. So I have to vote Wilder

it wasn't a remake...

In fact it has very little in common with the original.
2005-12-04, 5:57 AM #24
I enjoyed the Depp version more, actually. Of course, it's been quite a while since I've seen the Wilder version, so I don't know. I just don't remember particularly enjoying the Wilder version, but I loved the Depp one.

I'm not voting cause I can't vote for either of them. They both had their moments.

I don't really think they're all that comparable, the movies are too radically different. They both suited their own parts well.

Depp is creepy. I mean, too creepy - even for Willy Wonka. Like a vampiric Michael Jackson. He's a good actor when he's paired up with a decent director, but usually his talents are squandered by a certain particular overrated hack who just so happens to enjoy emphasizing Depp's creepy/vampiric Michael Jackson-esque qualities.

No one would be making the comparison to Michael Jackson if not for the moronic media.

I love gene wilder. There is no comparison. (Gene wilder+mel brooks=pure gold)
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Tim Burton isn't an overrated hack. He's a great director, but his strong points are those which you find creepy. Depp has been working with Burton for a decade, and the two make GOOD movies. Burton has a flair for writing the odd, and Depp has professed that he enjoys playing Burton's characters.

Wilder.

I payed £4 to see two hours of one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
nope.
2005-12-04, 10:11 AM #33
The new version is lame, really. It seemed less "alive" to me than the previous one. And the part with the father? Just stupid...

I know they are radically different, and that the new one is faithful to the book, but comparisons can still be made. And the new one is OK as compared to the original which was great.

And I just like Gene Wilder overall... funny man indeed.

Gene Wilder...I just enjoyed the character more.

Ditto.

Like someone mentioned earlier, Depp looked like Michael Jackson.

I can't say I like either version more than the other, and I think Depp and Wilder were both fantastic. I voted Wilder because I grew up with that version of the story I guess.

That's strange, because I can plainly see how hideous and frightening Michael Jackson looks without requiring the assistance of Fox News analysts.

(HINT: I DON'T WATCH TV.)
